Anyone know if there is room under the dashboard "Dummy" speaker covers for an actual speaker, say maybe a 6x9? :confused

Of course there is :) The non bose vettes had speakers there. I dont recall size offhand....but i think they are 6x9... I did install a GM auxiliary speaker there for my CB. One thing to keep in mind...later vettes may not have the grills cut out...so if your dash was replaced..... I find this od since I recall reading how when people conplained about the empty spots Chevy said it was "designed" that way so bose speakers reflected sound off windshield. Why cover it up then?

If you want to see pics of what dash looks like out of car...go to our site corvettearchives.com Then go to Repairs then Dash Tips :upthumbs

Thanks’ so much. Just what I wanted to see. My Bose doesn't work well. Needs to have all new amps. Best Buy wants $600 or $700 for a new (Sony) system and those Bose amps are $125ea +S/H. My thought was to remove the Bose head assem. and replace it with maybe an Alpine, but then getting to those speakers in the door is a real bear. So why not just wire the Alpine to two new speakers under the dash pad since GM was kind enough to cut the outlets for them. And who needs two more speakers in the back any way? With my Borla system you'd need an extra amp to hear them anyway.
Thanks again for the reply & pics

There is another option. Use your bose speakers and power them with the replacement head unit. When my front left amp gave up I just bypassed the amp completely. The stock wire is decent guage to safely handle power...front and rear. So you could just bypass bose amps on all 4.
You can also add those speakers if you want to dash and keep working Bose amps by splitting signal from the interface you'd need to run Bose and aftermarket.
Once you sit down and look at the wiring diagram it gets easy. I'll look for it and post it in a couple days.

Btw..I can hear the back ones with the Borla :-D

It seemed to me that one should be able to use existing wires with a new head unit, but some one told me that wasn't possible...so much for hearsay! Anyway thx. for your response. One additional issue. Do you know if these replacement head units i.e., the good ones, have a way to activate the antenna?

They sure do. There is a seperate lead on the harness if you have a power antenna :) I also found it conveniant to install the antennae switch to save the motor when you arent using radio station. It always works the same way as stock (on with radio) but allows you to keep it down if you want when listening to tape/cd. They sella kit but wiring scematic is also on our site with teh other radio stuff.

Bose Speakers

Be careful using those Bose speakers. They are 2 ohm impedence, and some amps will overheat with such a low figure. I found some Kenwood 4 ohm speakers that fit into the Bose enclosures. The Bose speaker enclosures are very good!

If you put that switch in the orange wire at the antenna relay, you can switch between "Automatic" and "Hold That Position". H.T.P. can be up. down, or anyplace you want it. The antenna relay is under the trim piece at the hatch latch, on the left side of the car. I like to leave my antenna up about 12". If my reception is weak (hardly ever), I flip the switch and the antenna goes up.

If you put the switch in the antenna control wire to the head unit, you'll have a choice of "Automatic" or "Down".
