parking brake console

On my '72, I removed my parking brake console/cover simply by removing the four screws on the sides of the cover. Then I read in all three of my 'vette manuals that to remove the console, you first have to remove the 3 rear storage compartments (glove box, battery storage, etc.).

What's up with that? Why would the manuals say that? Two of the manuals are for 68-82 'vettes, but the third is for all 72 Chevys (with sections for the different models).

OK, got an answer. Seems as though there's supposed to be a bolt connecting the pb console to the rear compartments, but this bolt's been removed and the hole has been covered up with carpeting.

It's not that the hole was covered with carpet since the bolt was merely pushed through the carpet. Anyone that has pulled a center console is reluctant to reinstall the bolt. Btw, it is a 7/16" bolt. It you put it in snuggly but not more than finger tight, you can barely reach in their and pull it with your fingers and the storage compartments still in place.

Is this the same on a '78? I have to replace my PB Lever.

Probably. I have the same bolt on my 74. Look in a parts catalog, if the same console is used in 74 as in your car (and I think it is), it's there!

All you need to do is get access to the area under the center of the car behind the seats. I could pull the center glove box area out easily. I stuck my hand down there and found the bolt.

On my 69, I remove the "glove box" above the jack. I can then fish my big "mitt" in there to get access to the bolt. I use a 1/4 inch drive socket. I do not remove the entire rear glove box/center box/battery box assembly. Chuck
