Hey Everyone,

The parking brake in my 1982, Auto does not work anymore.
I have heard some people talk about a way to adjust this. Could someone give me a little more details about how to do this?

I know that the worst case scenario is that I need to do a complete rebuild, but i'd like to try with the easy solution and go from there.

Thanks!

There is an adjusting spindle inside the drum that you should be able to access through a hole in the disc. Although this is often rusted and frozen (as mine was), you're supposed to be able to use a screwdriver through the access hole to adjust. Tighten all the way and then back-off by approx 5 teeth.

I replaced my whole assembly with stainless steel. I was not a fun project.

unless your parking brake was used for stopping the car in lieu of brakes (as mine was with it's previous owner), the park brake is probably fine 'shoe wise' and just needs adjusting.

rotate the disk so the adjusting hole is at "6 oclock"
the adjuster is adjusted by engaging the crown of the adjuster with a wide thin bladed adjuster or screwdriver.

the handle of the adjusting tool will go from 12 oclock to 6 oclock (on each side)

unless bubba put the wrong adjuster in each side.

this link may help more than my armchair explaination

One of the generic tune up manuals (Chilton's, Hayne's -- can't recall which because I have both) tells how to adjust the parking brake.
