Passive Keyless Entry

I was recently out of town in my 96 torch red convertible and decided to wash the car. I stopped the car, left the key in the ignition with the top and windows up, shut the door, and after a few seconds, the PKE locked the doors and set the alarm. I had to call a lock smith to break into the car and retrieve the keys. Since then I've disabled the PKE.

Any suggestions as to why this happened and how to prevent it from happening again without having to disable the PKE?...

Input appreciated.

Have been going thru the manual regarding your PKE situation. Could you post more info, such as, where was FOB, was key all the way in the ignition switch or ????-

I have been the same situation as you did. Some time I have the backup key with me, but some time not. It almost drove me crazy. So I disconnected the passive keyless entry and cleared it out of my car today.

The guy I bought my car from said he locked the keys in the car once. He shook the car - I guess by the pinch under the rocker panel - enough to activate the PKE and it unlocked for him. That is what I plan to try if I ever lock myself out. Also, the windows are framless so you should be able to pull the top of the window out enough to get your hand or something in to trip the lock on the door panel. I used to do this on my Camaro all the time. The window assembly is pliable enough to pull the glass away from the car without hurting it or the mechanism inside the door. It seems like someone has mentioned this here before.

If the key is in the ignition, (all the way in) then the car won't lock the doors.

If it is in the car, other than the ignition, or not all the way in, the doors will lock once it can't 'find' the fob anymore. The fob has a motion sensor in it to turn it on and off, so the fob will shut off if left sitting for a few minutes, then the car will lock, regardless if they are in or out of the car. all you have to do is wake up the fob by moving it to get the car to unlock... so, shake the car, as said before, and the car will unlock.

Thanks for the information everyone. That is interesting about shaking the car. I may try that IF it happens again.

I may not have had the key all the way in the ignition, I don't recall. After the locksmith unlocked it I hurredly grabbed for the key. I'm also going to try installing a new battery to see if that helps the situation.

Anyway, thanks again.
