I'm replacing pinion seal on my 65, I marked the nut w/reference mark before removing..But to me the nut was not tight, what would be the torque when installing, also diff. bracket bolts need to be replaced, is there some way to drop the bracket for installing new bolts? Thanks

The pinion nut should not be torqued to a spec but put back to the original position. The lash of the pinion bearings are set by crushing a sleeve until you get the correct pinion bearing preload. Tightening the nut past its original position will increase the bearing preload and could make the beating fail. Put some thread lock on the threads, and return the nut to its original position, or install a new crush sleeve and start the process all over again.

I had a tool made that would allow me to secure the yoke on the differential. Then using a dial type torque wrench we determined the break loose torque of the nut. We torque the nut to the break loose specs after replacing the seal; worked fine.

Except when someone has used Locktite on the threads.

The only proper way to set-up is to check the rotating torque of the pinion when the nut is tightened. There is a spec for this, and you just crush the sleeve until the torque for rotating the pinion reaches the spec, and then you are done. This takes a very accurate gauge since the torque spec is in inch pounds! Too much preload and the bearings fail, too little and the rearend makes noise. Putting the nut back at it's original location should work very well since nothing has changed.

Good Point! I am glad they did not use Locktite on my 61.
