The exhaust pipe that comes from the cat and attaches
to the one that goes over axle to the muffler came lose
on the passenger side. The flanges are still bolted together
on the one that goes to the muffler. Can a "mom & pop"
muffler shop fix this or do I have to take it to the dealer?
Also can they custom make an X pipe or dose it have to
be in a certain spot and "tuned" to length and size?
Why do I need an Xpipe anyway ?

Any decent muffler repair shop should beable to repair your exhaust system. As far as the X-pipe goes your C5 has a H-pipe and the X-pipe would replace it. From a performance view the H pipe has some shortfalls, its restrictive because it is placed 90 degrees to the path of the ehaust flow and any exhaust gases must turn a 90 degree corner. With a X pipe it is supposed to balance the backpressure between the independant exhaust branches which should increase power and reduce resonance. There are plenty of aftermarket company's that sell a good quailty X pipe like Corsa, Magnaflow and Bassani but to me are expensive. If you go with a complete cat back exhaust system then I would install an X pipe otherwise I would leave the H pipe alone with the stock exhaust system . Just my $.02 ...:beer :bang

Hi there,
From your description here, you shouldnt need to have it welded. If you are looking at the broken flange, is it still attached to the muffler, and the broken pipe is on the converter side?????
If your description is correct, then you have another option, you see, the catalytic converter assembly is warrantied for 8 years or 80,000 miles, which ever comes first.
So, if you are within that parameter, and it has not been modified, like with an X pipe, you can have it repaired for free.
A dealership will replace the converter, and all 4 seals.
Please keep us posted as to how you make out, c4c5:hb

By the sound of it, this happened to me also a couple of months ago, but I was told taht the welds had actually broke. I took it to the dealer and it was fixed in a day at no charge.
