2002 Torch Red Coupe
Hi

I have the opportunity to either take a solid top or plexi top for a coupe or should l take them both?

My gut says that they plexi is all that l need, the color of the coupe is Torch Red.

Alan

P.s. This is a car that l am going to be buying.

How Much For Both?

I think I'd take both and store the ones I'm not using at the time. Gives you a two fold approach and a nice change for looks no? Then again, it's not my money, good luck with which ever way you decide to go.

If the car originally came with the dual top option, I would opt for both...

If I was going to purchase your C5 from you some day, I would check your C5s codes and question the missing top. To some people this means nothing, to me, it would be something that may make me steer away from the car.

If the dual tops were an OEM option on this particular C5, I would expect both to be included in the sale of the car. If the original owner later bought the second top, I’d see what his price is and if it’s reasonable, I’d purchase the top.

Good luck with your C5 purchase Kingman!

Quite a lot of sun comes through the plexi-top during the summer. Maybe that does not matter much in NJ, but it could in a hotter climate.

Hi

Good idea l will check the build sheet, l have it.

Right now l'm $3500 over my budget and my wife knows it!!!! I'm married for over 37 yrs and my wife writes the checks.

That's why l have the money for sure.

Alan

p.s. I checked out an identical one in Millennium Yellow with twice the mileage and $1500 cheaper but it wasn't as clean and had some paintwork, but not an accident. That is why l passed on it.

It's an awesome color.

Hi Kingman!
I have a Torch Red coupe with the acrylic top. It's not too bad in the summertime, but it's not cool either. I don't mind it. If it were me, I'd go for both tops. Ya just never know if/when something could happen to one, you'd still have the other as a back-up.

Just something to think about.

Good luck!!!!!

I agree with DV....
I run the white top during the summer to keep the heat down and run the plexi in the winter so the car will heat up some.
I have heard stories of the plexi one crazing over time but if you could get both that would be the way to go.

Good luck!

One of the catalogs has a static screen that l put on my 96 and it was perfect.

I will have to strike a deal with my wife. I cannot think of another thing that l don't do around the house by making so many deals.

Mine had just the red when I bought it and I bought the plexi on Ebay to have both, I am just the opposite I run the plexi in the summer to let in the light and use the colored in the winter for the insulation the headliner gives.
Theres nothing like the view of the stars at night thru the plexi top.

BTW they generally sell on Ebay for @$600

I did that in the C4 too, but the solid top is very much better than the acrylic..... even though the tinted top looks much better. You'll find the car has a lot less road noise with the solid top, is cooler summer and warmer winter, and trips are much more comfortable--always a good selling point with the Better Half. :L Also, it gives you two totally different looks (so you can also swear, Honey, honest to Gawd if wasn't me there!). If you have the option with the car you pick, go for both and you won't be sorry. Guess if had to choose just one, I'd take the solid top...and have it painted to look like the tinted top.

Good luck with your search.

Neat: the graphic drops off when you change tops ;LOL Looks great both ways, doesn't it?

And the body side molding!

the plastic top was taken at Cruise-fest, note 67HEAVEN in the background
while the other was taken before I went for the first ride of the year.

graphics will come off when I tire of them or they fall off;LOL

Kingman -

There have been some excellent points made here ~ particularily the one about the original codes.

Mine was originally purchased with both, but when I bought it, the dealer only had the plexi top. @ that time, codes really didn't mean that much to me...and still don't, but they might to someone down the line.

As for functionality, I live in Clearwater FL...just about the most sunny place outside of AZ that you are going to find. I really do not get all that much heat transfer anytime of the year and although I've not ridden in a C5 with Std top, I don't think the road noise is objectionable. Actually, I probably get more from the Run-Flats.

If you can swing both, go for it. But if you have to make a choice, the plexi also gives you the feel of the outdoors when it is in place and you aren't going to get that with a Std top.

Ejnoy The Ride!

When I got the 01 it only had the plexi top. I haven't driven it in warm weather yet, but I enjoy the open feel of the top.

MidAmerican Motors has a snap on headliner for the plexi tops, and I am considering one for the summer months.

Go for both tops if you can. The flexibility would be great.

RED!

If you HAVE to opt for one top, get the painted one. There are way more tinted tops for sale at any given moment if you want one later. A red top will be much harder to find. Besides, the body color top looks better. I have both and never use the tinted one. I rarely look up while driving.

Easy decision !!!!!!!!!!!!

I took them both and both of them were like new if not better then new,

The entire car is pristine to almost a fault! I drove it home yesterday (450 miles) and it was a joy for sure.

What l loved most was the HUD. I don't know how l lived without it before.
