UPDATE plug-n-play Bose w/cd at MidAmerica '84-9

Has anybody tried this?
seems an easy way to upgrade the stereo system to include a cd player.
My amps and speakers seem fine, but the radio "locks up" and freezes sometimes.

It peaked my interest but the price seems steep.

Radar :)

WAIT a minute!!!!! 550. for a used Radio,Are you NUTS!!!!! Try getting a hold of DR DONS in Texas. I think its www.dr dons.com. He Rebuilt my gold system last year for 300 bucks!!!!! It came back as good as NEW!!!!!:D

It should be pretty much plug-and-play, although I agree the price is steep. These delco bose 1.5 din stereos can easily be found on Ebay for much less. The stereo is from an early 90s camaro, as you can tell by the angled part of the display window. M&R has some very nice ones as well, from different GM cars of that time, you can check them out here:

For a time I had the caprice silver series cd player and was really happy with it, but I sold it when I added an aftermarket system.

wo wo wo hit the brakes. I want the CD. I want EZ install. do any of those meet that
requirement?

I have been trying to decide what to do about my system for a while now but did not want to replace the head unit with anything that did not fit right. I also wanted to keep the original wiring in tact. I decided to go with the Pioneer direct fit unit from Mid-America Part Number 611-152-C.

It is also pricey when you compare this model number to the same unit sold by crutchfield. The only advantage that I can see is that Mid-America sends the units out to have them re-wired for Bose systems. This basically amounts to taking the high-level outputs from the head unit and running them into a "knocker downer" box so that the level seen by the Bose amps is correct. I suppose there is also some impedance matching going on in the supplied box as well. The adapter box also allows you to tune the output level of each channel although I did not find this necessary.
It would be up to you to decide if this wiring/adapter work done up front is worth about $200 bucks since you can get basically the same unit from Crutchfield for about $250 - $300. When I talked to Crutchfield they did not show this unit as a direct replacement probably just because of the Bose re-configuring and additional components.
I have to admit the fit was very nice, I used all of the mounting hardware from the original unit and the plugged the unit right in. About a 2 hour job.
This thing is not going anywhere. Even the back support mount fit on this unit. Normally there is some modification involved in this area.
Overall I am happy with the unit and it is much more versatile than the original head. I can add changer down the line and it also has low level subwoofer outputs. I do plan to add a sub later as well. Keep in mind audio technology has come a long way and although you would be getting the improved sound of the CD player you would be missing out on a lot of new features offered by more modern head units.
The unit is very configurable and although I have certainly heard better systems it does sound pretty good. I also went ahead and replaced the 4 Bose drivers (speakers) since they were only about 30 bucks each and mine had over 14 years on on them. My amps were fine.
As I said I am sure there is a "cheaper" solution but if ease of installation and a nice original look are what you are looking for this is a good choice.

I saw that one, but I thought the Bose was a nice touch.
Bit on $$ side.
When I decide, I'll be sure to comment.

Last summer I bought the Pioneer Corvette replacement cd player. Perfect fit, complete plug in type, and works with the BOSE.

They were expensive but if I remember correctly, I got it off ebay for around 200 bucs.. Workls great, brings my speakers back to life.

I understand where you are coming from. My 92 was Cassette tape only at first and I wanted the CD player. It turns out that all the wiring was there already so all I had to do was buy the Bose Gold CD unit and bolt it in. Direct plug and play. I bought my head unit from a local recycling place (junk yard) a lot cheaper than $550. Of course, they are getting hard to find at junk yards now and if you don't have the CD unit already, you surely can't get yours converted to a CD at dr_dons.com for that price.

MidAmerica may be the only way to go to get the proper Bose unit.

roger that.
Me thinks this be the way...

yes dr dons has them for $500.00.
this thread just saved me 50 clams!!

I got that same radio from dr dons and it wasn't that much. the only thing I had to do was file down the adjustment knobs( left right front rear) because they wouldn't fit. anytime you see something from M.A. you can bet you'll find it cheeper somewhere else.

Tuna, I have a '92 with a cassette tape unit only too. I would like the CD player. What in addition to the Bose Gold unit would I have to get and how difficult is it to install? I guess I am asking about the head unit. What is this and is it not on the Bose Gold unit? Also, what's the price range?

Thanks, Rick

All I needed was the Bose CD head unit for the dash. My car already had all the Bose speakers so swapping the dash unit out completed the job and I got speed sensitive volume in the process. It seems that the only difference is the head unit. I bought my CD unit at a 'junk yard' for $300 about 8 years ago. It was pretty easy to install. The hardest part was finding all the screws that hold the center dash bezel in place. Once that was removed, the cassette/radio head came right out and the new one when right back in place. I tested it before putting the bezel back in place just to make sure it worked and that was that.

If you can't find one locally, try the other places listed here. The $375 from Sipple sounds about right.

Good luck.

Spysee, is what you bought a true plug-n-play? In other words, can I remove my current cassette player in my '92, plug in the new unit, and have a nice Bose compliant CD player? What other adjustments did you make and what is the contact for Sipple Electronics?

Thanks, Rick

Rick,
According to them, yes, all I have to do is pop out the old and pop in the new.
They claim a perfect fit.
The only differance is the led display is more blue than it is green.
Tey claim the units are from Caddys and are remanufactured to fit the corvette.
I'll let you guys know this weekend after I install it.
Stay tuned.
Contact is George. res6kb34@verizon.net, Email for the toll free number or use this number: 814-454-4516

I told him to expect some calls and sales but would't budge on price.
$375.00 including shipping.
