I picked up a set of stock wheels for my 84 and would like to polish them. Does a member know the correct procedure to polish the wheels?
What grit sand paper do I start/finish with?

water sand them with 1200 grit, if you need to go to 1000 re-do with 1200. use jewellers rouge with a muslin polishing disc.this will make them beam.

Thanks for the reply to Brimis. I need to do the same.

Have you done this yet? Your 1984 wheels are clear-coated aluminum, I'm almost positive. My 1987's were. I would *NOT* want to sand them with 1200 grit paper or you are going to severely compromise the clear coat. For painted wheels, you should polish and wax them just as you would any other painted surface on your car.

Are these wheels you bought new or reconditioned? Or just new to you?

The thing is, wheels that old.....like mine......the clear coat is half gone anyway. I saw some just like mine on an 84 that the guy used paint stripper and then wet sanded them. They really shine like aluminum and not like clear coat.

Really we have no choice.:(

i forgot to say to srip off the clear, here's a bad pic of mine after .

I picked up a used set and actually started the process over the weekend. I started with 250, 400, 800 and 1000 grit. I'm almost finished with one wheel and it looks okay.
I'll keep you posted.

Hey Mike,
I got the same wheels you do.
I'm in process of painting/polishing them now.

I've painted the inner surfaces black. I have some sanding & polishing to do next.
1000 grit then 1500. (you can buy those at wal-mart, cheap!)

What type of paint are you using on the inner surface?

Believe it or not, I'm using plain old Krylon gloss black spray paint.

I cleaned the wheels good, and I've put on about 4 coats.

I'm still unsure about using wheel clearcoat or not....
