My Bose radio in my 86 C4 conv. Makes a loud popping noise when I turn it on. In Dec. of 02 I sent it out and had the tape player repaired. The tape player works fine. It had made this noise before but now it does it all the time. If I turn the volume up all the way it stops but the radio sounds terrible. There are times when it sounds OK but lately the popping has been more. Do I have bad amps in the speakers ? Thanks for any and all help.....Bob

I remember reading somewhere that a relay associated with the unit can cause this. Just not sure where I read it. It may have been in MAD or Ecklers cataloge. Maybe someone who really knows will chime in.

Yup, you got amps in the speakers. Sounds ike they may be going bad from what I've read. They can be repaired, you can even do it yourself if you have some electrical capability. I'll try to find the link for you later. I've also red that they should all be repaired at the same time for best results. Once they start to go, their all probly going soon:duh . I'm going thru my system from antenna forward now.

The capacitors in your amps are starting to go. They need to be replaced in pairs...ie. both front or both rear amps. The caps are easy to replace once the unit is removed from the car which is quite a job. Replacement parts can be had from radio shack. I personally replace with better then stock parts. Normally the parts are rated with 20% tolerance which means that the value can swing +/- 20% of the rated value. Plus heat also causes the value to change. The amps have caps rated at 105°C which equates to 221°F which is fine for them, but I use 2% tolerance parts to minimize the swing and keep it closer to it's intended engineered value. Those cost a bit more but are worth it in the long run. Radio Shack can order the parts for you or you can find them at places like www.jameco.com

I can also repair them for you.
