Here's an easy one for all you guy's & gal's,
When old yellow is at idle, i hear a popping or 'farting' sound
from the exhaust every few seconds.
Also, when i'm cruising and floor the loud pedal, passing gear
kick's in (auto. trans.) & the car 'surges' feel's like superman
is pushing and pulling the car.
And at idle, it's a little rough, then it smoothe's out almost all the time.
Other than that, it's a great runner!
Could this be a carb. or timing problem? (timing is at factory spec.)
Thanks alot! Gary.

:confused

Soumds like dirty carb jets.

Sounds like you are backfiring. I would take a look into that first. Maybe your ignition timing is off?

Gary,
You say easy one like you already know the answer?
If the timing is on then just go ahead and change the cam...wait...just kidding, check it first. Pull the valve covers (one at a time) and see if any of the rockers are just kind of vibrating (especially the ones toward the rear) as opposed to moving like the rest. Use a piece of cardboard to block the oil from spraying all over the car...hope you know what I mean.
I had a 79 350 van that sounded like it was making popcorn in slow motion and the cam was the cure. On the bright side, I gave that van to my brother in law over 10 yrs ago and it still goes like a bat outa ____ and he hasn't put a nickle into it (about 200 thousand highway miles now I think).
Let us know how it goes.
Good Luck, John.

I meant an easy one for all you guy's & gal's that know
more than me (not hard to do)

Thanks for all your replys so far, keep em coming!
Gary

I just had this same problem with my car, i dont know if your problem might differ but check the way your spark plugs are hooked up, make sure the firing order is correct.. My friend installed one in backwards and had me stumped until i switched the wires around

The way you explain the surging, it does sound like your timing isn't correct. That would explain most, if not all, of your symptoms. I would contact JohnZ. He would tell you exactly what the problem is.
