Hi all,

How can I tell if I have a posi rear end?

I´m installing the diff wich was drained, so my question really is what oil to use. Is it correct that I can use Gl-4 with non-posi but need GL-5 if I do have posi?

I do have the "use limited slip differential fluid only" plastic tag so maybe that's the answer to my first question?

If I do have posi, should I use an additive, or is that not necessary with a GL-5 oil?

Final question is how much oil to use? 4 pints or just add up to the hole?

Turn one axle by hand, if the opposite axle turns in the same direction then it should be a posi, if it turns the opposite direction then it is a open axle. You only need to use limited slip additive with a posi unit.

Make sure it's in Neutral for the above technique

Thanks, it should be a posi then. The diff is off the car, and the axles turns the same direction.

Guess I have to use limited slip additive, but what about GL-4 vs. GL-5 gear oil?

DO NOT use a GL-4 lubricant in a rear axle. GL-4 is for spur- or helical-gear, manual transmissions, not hypoid rear axle gears.

In your rear end, use a GL-5 designed for use with clutch-type, limited slip differentials. A limited slip additive may be necessary but, if the limited slip is quite, don't use it.

Fill the rear axle to the bottom of the fill port.
