1999 Bronze Coupe
Hello, new to the corvette world.

I just bought a 99 coupe with only 25,000 miles on it. It sat for 3 years in a garage(covered). I got a good deal but it comes with some gremlins.

First: After I got it running (new battery and gas) It throws the codes C1232 and C1233, Which I believe are the both front wheel speed sensors that are open or shorted. I haven't taken the wheels off to look at the sensors. Is this an easy fix?

Second: After I drove it for approximately 100 miles, 75% was highway at 75mph, the next day I discovered a puddle of power steering fluid on the garage floor.

Third:I found out the preceding battery had leaked and destroyed all of my vacuum hoses for the vents and blower. A/C doesn't work either.

I took it to the dealer to have them fix the A/C and get the vents working. I also told them to find out the leak on the power steering.

The dealer calls me back and tells me I need a brand new power steering pump that would cost $500.00 and a high pressure hose for another $130.00. He says there is fluid leaking out the front seal and the fitting on the hose is leaking.

Is it worth it to have them fix it? or should I buy the parts myself and attempt to fix it. I can work on cars. I just don't really have the necessary tools to do so. i.e. puller, lift, that sort of stuff.

Any help is appreciated.

99bronze, welcome to the CAC. That's a shame that it has those troubles with only 25,000 miles.

The battery leak is a common problem. I have a rubber mat that I need to install under mine to prevent that (if it hasn't happened some already).

As to your questions- I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I would probably take it to the dealer. But that's just me.

I would think that if you've got the time and the desire, there would be a lot of value (and peace of mind) in taking care of the problems yourself. I'd like to hear what some of our hands-on-technical members have to say.

HI there,
As far as the wheel speed sensors codes go, I would simply replace the wheel speed sensor harnesses, as this is the most common cause of failure.
These are plug and play and go from the sensor at the wheel to the subframe connection.
The power steering surprises me, but that is something that would require a power steering pulley puller and installer. These are special tools that you may be able to rent from Auto Palace/Auto Zone.
If you can handle basic hand tools, you should be able to do both repairs in about 4 hours total.

thanks for the responses..I took a look at it and found it was too much for me. I took it to another shop and they quoted me 489 plus tax including parts and labor using a delco pump. The pump is leaking out of the front seal.

Now all I need to do is find a programmer to put back what the dealer erased when I they did the column recall.:mad

Well, $576.00 dollars later I am back on the road with a new power steering pump and PULLEY. The pulley had all sorts of cracks throughout. It was flexing and that is what wore out the front seal on the pump. Anybody else have any pulleys replaced? This pulley was stock and the only mod that I could tell is that it was programmed with most likely a handheld tuner. The only new thing I put in the engine was a K&N air filter. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Glad you got everything worked out, sorry you had to pay so much! This is just evidence that they were made to DRIVE not sit in a garage under a cover!! What are people THINKING???? Seems like most of the problems I hear from people in my area are from the ones that don't drive them much. My seven closet friends with vettes drive them daily, and we've had little to no serious problems!

Safe driving and "Save the Wave!!"

That's "seven CLOSEST friends" not "seven CLOSET friends!!" whoops! That's a serious typo!!! whew!

PSST, Glen,
You do know you can go back and edit your posts when you find those typos you made, right? Just hit the edit button at the bottom of your thread and correct away.
