This is a little off the subject, but does anyone know if I can replace the generator mounted power steering pump on my 59 Impala with one from a Vette? They look like the drag link cylinder set up is very similar

Maybe I'm not clear about what you want to replace, but the generator-mounted P/S pump was never used on a Corvette; P/S started in 1963, using the conventional belt-driven P/S pump, and Corvettes had alternators from 1963 onward.

The C1 generators, however, are very similar - the C1 Corvettes used the passenger car power steering generator with the extended rear armature shaft to drive the tachometer drive gearbox.

A Little Clarity

What I'm working on is a mild custom Impala. I want to ditch the generator and PS pump combo and go to seperate pump and alternator. Does anyone know if I can use a Corvette pump in my Impala and therefore allow me to go to an alternator? Otherwise I'm stuck with the generator or at least the housing to hold the PS pump

I don't know if there's any difference in output pressure between the generator-mounted pump and the conventional separate pump or not; you should be able to use the conventional pump if you can find the right bracket/pulley combination.

According to Motor (mine does not list 59s)

PS control valve 5689397 was common to 60-64 Chevy, 63-7 Corvette, 62-6 ChevyII, Olds F85, Pontiac with A-C

Power Cylinders 5685399 were common 60-63 to Chevy and Corvette

Ask me a hard one :)

PS Motor's only covers 7 years - my book is 60-67, but the 60 Chevy is only a face (and butt) lift of the 59 so....................
