ok this is how it is.....my pass. window is giving me trouble..... i started a thread here that i didnt give enough detail so im trying again.....

when i use it the window motor seems to work......it goes down awkward though and it seems to stutter ....not a good description but thats what it seems to do.... and going up is really noisy....clunking sound that is metal to metal.....and it dont seem to go up straight.....it does however go up better when i open the door and give it the guidence it desires.....is it still the motor? just not enough power? or is it like the spring in the garage door that helps it go up and down.....the other one flys up and down effortlessly....but its gonna get warm and i really need to address this. there is a corvette shop i have in mind but before i get hosed, i want to find out your opinions.....they are the best ive seen and i appreaciate everyone of them.ive never been let down yet here....thanks all, Chas:bu

Chas,

There are lots of possible causes. The window could be out of adjustment causing it to bind, some of the plastic parts inside could be broken or missing, the spring could be bad, the motor could be bad, etc. You will need to take the door panel off and take a look to see what it is. The window regulators can be rebuilt for just over a $100 in parts. I just rebuilt mine and it made a big difference.

I have a little experience with power windows. I'm also an electronics specialist. So, if your motor works, it works. You have a mechanical problem. I agree with the previous thread, take the door apart and check all the window tracks and attachments. There are a lot of plastic pieces/bushings in there that are probably worn out or broken.

im gonna take the panel off....but it seems to me that theres an awfull lot of metal behind the skin.....not much room to see anything....but im gonna take it out and let ya know....thanks for the replys ...chas:upthumbs

Physical inspection is best step for starting troubleshooting. I had to work on both my power windows, the tension spring was broke on passenger side and lower braket to motor was broke on drivers side, someone had tried to arc weld (bubba) but it didn't hold.

as long as we are all looking at windows here, i have a similar problem as my window won't go all the way up and then to get the motor to engage to get it down, i have to slide the window down about 3 inches before the gears will grab and take the window down. i have felt the teeth on the gear that is attached to the window and they feel fine. i had my arm buried up to my elbow last night feeling around in the door for some sort of adjustment but i can't find any.

when the window is going up, it gets to a point at about 3/4 of the way up and then it is like the gear motor and the window gear get to far apart and the window stops moving. is there any adjustment that can be made. previous owner replaced the motor, i am assuming that the motors are pretty much the same for all years. any suggestions would be helpful. i will be taking the glass out soon as i will be replacing the outside rear view mirror with a stock one and the outside door handle will be replaced. i hate to take the window mechanism out as it is properly adjusted and i don't want to have to make all the adjustments to get it back.

thanks

Sounds like you are going to have to take it apart to figure out what's the matter. As long as you mark the positions of the adjustment bolts and get everything in the same position, I circled mine with a carpenter's pencil, there shouldn't be any adjustments to make. You remove three sets when rebuilding; the one that makes the window square, the one that controls how high the window goes and the set that controls the inboard/outboard position of the window.
