Power window regulator spring

One of my window regulator springs are broken causing my window to open too fast. I bought a new spring and thought it would just slip into place on the mounting post and I would only have to turn it slightly to slip the other end on the the other post as it shouldn't have much tension with the window up.

Well with the window up there is no tension on it and in fact it doesn't even contact the outer post at all with the window up. Now I think you have to turn the spring 180 degrees to preload the spring but that seems like way too much preload pressure, and I don't think you could get it on without removing the entire regulator from the door.

Has anyone replaced this spring before? Can you shed some light on how to install it.

RESTO, that's a real good question. i have thesame speed

double oops. i have the same window speed problem . and wasn't sure if it was a spring problem. my spring appears good, but may also be impoperly installed.
i will say it isn't that hard to remove the whole regulator. i used blocks of wood and C-clamps at each end of window .then the reg slipped out EZ,,

I think I'll play with it on Monday if I get the chance. Doesn't look too hard as long as you look at how it all goes together before you pull it apart.

I replaced the ones on my 80; should be the same. Removing the regulator was how I did it, but I also placed the gear plate as well.
