I am still looking into upgrading the brakes on my 64. I have looked at a disc conversion ( pretty pricey ) and am looking at the Praise Dyno drum brakes. Was wondering if anyone has any information about them other than the published articles. Also, if anyone has any actual experience using them. Would appreciate your input.
Thanks

I guess I need to ask: what are you trying to accomplish? Stock drum brakes, properly maintained with quality parts as needed, are entirely sufficient for street driving on street tires, and is the least expensive way to go. For a street car, if you can lock the wheels at speed (and stock drum brakes can do that), that's about all any brake can do for you.

AFAIK, an upgrade is only needed when you intend to drive much more agressively (Gymkhana, slolam, road racing, etc) at high speeds on sticky tires and you're concerned about brake fade caused by frequent/sustained braking and the attendant high brake temps that can glaze shoes & drums.

Yes, disk brakes stop somewhat better and run cooler, so they can handle a greater number of rapid stops in succession without fading. It is not super expensive to simply replace your system with a (used/refurbished) stock Corvette disk brake setup.

Wayne,
We are thinking about taking the vette to Phoenix during the winter. It seems to me that the stoplight to stoplight drag races that are Phoenix traffic would quickly take their toll on my current drum brakes. They are fairly new shoes, and they will lock the tires, but I am a little unsure how long they would remain effective.

Maybe I am just a little paranoid, but think I need better brakes. While I am doing that I think I will probably replace the lines and hoses as well. We have owned the car since 1970, and other than shoes and cylinders, have done nothing to the brakes.

stainless brake hoses

I'm going to put stainless brake hoses on my 64 . . you can get them at ecklers for $70.00 . . They're due to be changed anyway so why not upgrade.

I wonder if you could use these brakes in the vintage racing classes that require drum brakes. They would seem to give you a tremendous advantage over OEM brakes.
