I have a connection that knows a guy with a 1965 "396" fastback coupe. I dont post to this forum much because of my corvette ownership, but i was curious if you guys could help. From what I am told it is nassau blue. The car is said to be in A1 shape. It has only 27,000 original miles. It is not however a matching numbers car, from what I have been told. It does however have a 396ci 425hp corvette motor in it, from that year. I dont know how, but it does. How can i check the motor, and what price range can i expect, providing it is in great shape and the motor is in fact a corvette motor.

Thanks

Craig

Hi Craig

even if it's not a numbers matching car, if you can get the numbers off the engine and post them here somebody can check their references and tell you if it is at least a "proper" motor for the car.
You need to get the stamped number off the engine number pad plus the casting date # and block cast #.
Also, since the 396ci was only available the 2nd half of the year, post the car's VIN number also since if it's determined that the car is an early '65 car it shouldn't have that motor in it anyway - the 396 didn't enter production until approx Feb of '65.
BTW, if it helps, there were only 2157 cars in '65 with the 396 motor (out of a total of 23,564 car's that year).
the block casting number should be 3855962.
The engine suffix code should be "IF" within the stamped number on the engine pad.

Barry,

Thanx for all the info. I will acquire all the information I can and post what I find. The info is priceless. I knew you guys would take care of me.

Thanks again
Craig

Expect $50k to $100k

last year.....green on saddle cp. sold for $57500
this year.....yellow / black "survivor" documented car sold at Bloomington for $68000. What a buy as owner wanted $80.

I know a perfect red/ black in texas for $90000.

So if this mis matched incorrect engine car was originally a 396.......and you can pick it up for $25 to $30k, jump on it !
