A buddy did it.
It was a long hard process to get it RIGHT,.
But, at the end of the day, he has an 86 thats been upgraded in almost everyway to the power and braking of a 90's ZR-1. He started with a fresh crate motor and added the charger to that. We all assumed that the stock motor with 150K would'nt last long. He agrees that the correct way would have been to go with a better short-block as a base that had a forged bottom end for strength, which means reliability. But he had to pass on the forged goodies that time around in order to pay for all the hood and paint work. There's a bunch of "other" stuff that the pro-charger sales guys don't mention.
I can tell you without reservation, that there is much much more to it than bolting on the charger...but it does bump it up as much as 150HP when tuned right. For simplicity,. nitrous is the way to go. There are Nitrous Fogger systems sold on flea-bay for $500. The charger route will be closer to $5000 for the basics.
Had a friend that bought a Procharger. When he had warranty issues, the company jerked him around and around.
So, here is the deal. Depending on how you use it, you could consider nitrous. If you are like me and like to hit it every chance you get, nitrous is going to be too expensive for you. Unfortunately, once you bought it, you are pretty much committed. Hence I don't and will not use nitrous.
I prefer to use a supercharger since once you do it, it is there. I WOT the thing several times a day so nitrous will nickle and dime me to death. Sure, a blower is more money up front but once paid, beat as much as you want and it is paid for.
