I just finished the deal on my first corvette. It's a 1979 L82 four speed with a horrible interior but it's all mine :D I traded a 1994 Bronco I didn't need for it & could have bought it for $3,000 cash ( I paid 4k for the Bronco a year ago so it was even) One of the benefits of working in a car dealership I guess.

The car is solid underneath with an excellent frame & tight front end. I replaced a leaking rear caliper & roadtested it. The engine is tight & runs smooth with some minor leaks. I was so happy to finally drive a C3 I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for hours, especially since this one is mine.

I don't think the secondaries are opening but I'll check them further when I get back to work on Monday. The one issue that may be serious is the play in the rear axles. I am a former tech but never worked on a vette before. How hard is it to repair the play? it seems to be in the pumpkin. The body is in good shape & I plan on using her as a driver so it is good enough for me.

The main problem with the car is that it has no original vin tag. It has a state asigned vin on it. The story I got was that it was stolen when it was a couple of years old & the state asigned the vin then. Checking the trans & engine numbers it is a real L82 four speed so that is enough for me. I doubt the car would ever be worth anything due to replacement Vin but it'll do for now.

Welcome mainelaker!

Welcome to Corvette Action Center and congrats on your 'vette purchase!
How many times have you gone out to the garage...just to check on her? :D

Be aware that the Corvette rear end will look like it has more movement, because it has two half shafts w/ u-joints that allow movement between the pumpkin side-yokes and wheels, not like a standard solid axle. There is a method for checking for excessive play, but I don't know what it is.

Someone else should be along shortly and they'll be able to advise you better than I. Unless it is making noise, I would think it is okay.
Enjoy your vette, and I agree that with a state issued vin you pretty much have a clear plate to make any mods you wish! Value will be the amount of enjoyment you get out of it.
I'm hoping you have many smiles per mile!

:w Congrats on your new Vette and Welcome to the Corvette Action Center.....Enjoy !!!!!!

Mainelaker....congrats on the new '79 purchase and a L82 with four speed to boot!

I believe all cars are like people in that they have a very interesting history and sounds like your new car already has alot of interesting history. Corvettes are even more complex with historical information as they are passed around so much and normally don't stay in the same hands very long.

You are only starting your relationship with this classic. Please pass on any new and interesting things you may find out in the coming days. We all love these stories.

I know I do!

Take care and enjoy your new ride.

Congradulations; there are very few things = to owning a vette. I honestly beleive there is a state of mental condition called " Corvette Fever", I know that I have it.

Thanks for all the kind words, I am rather certain that there is a problem in the rear end wich is more than likely the c-clips. I will have to pull it apart to inspect or send it out to someone. I haven't even brought the car home yet & I keep peeking out towards the garage, this is going to be a LONG winter!

Congrats and welcome to the :CAC, neighbor!

:w
Guy - Yeah, I'm waiting for winter to end too.

A picture

I had to set my camera to it's lowest setting so the pic is fuzzy but you get the idea.

Wow, I think you got a good deal there...

Mainelaker....

Thanks for the PIC. Just looking at the car and what you paid for it looks like you got a pretty good deal there. Even with the unique VIN tag history this should at least be a pretty good driver.

Enjoy your car and welcome to CAC!

Way to go mainelaker! Welcome to Corvette ownership and CAC! I bought my first Vette a little over a year ago . . . a black '79 L82 4 speed too! Enjoy the fun times to come and the fun of working on little "projects" like the rear end you mentioned!
