I plan on getting my car judged next year...I have not yet had it judged so I don't know exactly where I stand, but my car is fairly original. I would like to pull the engine this winter to replace all the gaskets, maybe get a valve job, paint the block, get the exhaust manifolds looking they way they should, clean, etc...I have a judging manual so I'd redo everything according to spec...My question is should I hold off until I have it judged or go ahead and do it now? Judging isn't until May & I wouldn't want to pull the engine until the following winter if I wait. advice?

I'd say it depends on your intentions. If you want to go "Top Flight" then you should pull the engine. If you're going "Survivor" then leave the engine in.

Most people are going for flight judging, so anything you do to replicate the original factory condition will score higher points. Now, if you're going Survivor, anything you do which affects originality (versus the appearance of originality as per flight judging) will reflect negatively so every step, every cleaning, every improvement must be carefully considered as originality happens but once; appearance can always be restored.

For a Suvivor status I heard that if your car has had a repaint (orginal color) or reupholstering the interior that it disqualifies you...is this true?

Tony I'd have it judged first to get a complete baseline. The New England NCRS Chapter will have a local meet May 1st. As far as Survivor, that's Bloominton Gold. For NCRS it's Star/Bowtie judging. You get a star for interior, exterior, chasis & mechanical, but the car does not have to be 100% original in all areas (80 or 85%, I forgot). You will be told if your car is a Star/Bowtie canidate at the Chapter meet. Your car could be a 1,2 or 3 Star car or if it's a 4-Star, it's a "Bowtie". Only cars with 4 Stars are called "Bowtie". I suggest you join the New England Chapter and come to our annual Business meeting Jan 10 down in Danvers. PM me if you want more details and I'll give you a call. I'm off next Wed so maybe we can get together for lunch.

OK, I guess I'm out for a Survivor status...If I can borrow my neighbors engine lift I'll pull out the motor...This will be a first for me. Or is this too much trouble to go through to change a few gaskets and paint the block?
Guy, I'll get in touch w/ ya soon! The Danvers meet in May is what I got my eye on!

And it's winter. You local NCRS guys are going nuts sitting around with nothin' ta do! Throw a pizza/beer party and invite the judges to take a glance at your project. Should turn into a near full blown, judging event!

That's one reason to come to the NE Chapter Business meeting next month. Run the idea up the flagpole.
