How much capacity does the stock Q-Jet have, roughly? 300HP? 400HP? 500HP?

Joe

My 383 is 450+ HP and 500 ft lbs. The Q-jet has 750 cfm jets. It is a pre emission carb. The vaccum secondaries never bog down. It will pin you to the seats!!!! Even with 3.08 rear gears and 400 turbo tranny it will burn the tires as long as you stay with it. Fred.

Is that a factory carb well tuned?

:Silly :Silly :Silly

Sounds good. I really don't want to have to replace the carb, on top of everything else (literally) when I build the new engine.

Joe

The '79 Q-jet is rated at 795 CFM. If you can find someone that can tune it and you are willing to use a vacuum secondary you should not have any problems feeding any small block engine.

LEEJANDZ- It is not a factory Q-jet. It is completely rebuilt and tuned to my engine carb. I would suggest checking on the net for a good rebuilder. Ask for a pre-emission carb if you live in a friendly state. If not then maybe a Edelbrock Q-jet($$$). Fred.

Get a factory remanufactured Edelbrock QJet. Like new, over 100 bucks cheaper! (I know, I have one.) Summit sells 'em.

I'm looking at a 406, making around 375-425 hp. Do I need a new carb, or can I use my stock Q-Jet? I'd like to avoid the expense of a replacement, if possible, but if I'm going to need a new one, I want to know now, before I build it and find out that it isn't breathing.

Joe

only certain big inch buicks, olds and pontiacs used the 800 cfm carb back in the 70s,never on a chevy engine even the BBs. the primary is 3/32" bigger in diameter. they are a very good performance carb as drag race SS class camaros run in the 10s with a Q jet
