Greetings, I just changed the spark plugs on my 79 L-48 and noticed the plugs were really black (carbon fouled) . I was going to adjust the air/fuel mixture but the carb still has the caps over the adjustment screws. IT looks like a silver marble. Can anyone advise how to safely remove these caps?

thanks, Mike

I think they just pry off.

Drill a little hole in the caps on the side edge, and pry them out with a prick punch. They are pressed into the casting with a sleeve on the edge that goes in about 1/8".
The adjusting needles don't have a screw slot in the end, so find a piece of copper or aluminum tube that slides over the end of the screw and hammer some flat spots on it that catch the flat spots on the screws. Or buy an "official" adjusting tool.

You need to understand that those screws only control the mixture at idle; once you're out of the idle system, mixture is controlled by the jets and metering rods.
