Does anyone know what the rate is for a used ZF 6 speed, im converting from auto to manual and looking to drop this in, also would you recomend the ZF or Richmond 6 speed... and does anyone make a short throw shifter for the richmond, i know hurst makes one for the zf...

thanks

Ive seen them on ebay for 1500$. You will also need a zf clutch flywheel and bellhousing that will run about a thousand more. I paid 550$ for my zf clutch. goodluck

You can get a rebuilt one from White racing in Tampa for around $2500. That's about what a rebuilt one goes for, as I checked around alot before I bought mine. But he requires yours in exchange.

Buying a used one, you have to just hope it's going to last, because parts are REALLY expensive for them.

thanks guys for the info, so you both suggest that i go with a zf over a richmond? thanks again

If I were you I would call Richmond and find out what replacement parts cost.

If you're starting from scratch I would probably go with the Richmond if the parts are cheaper to fix it. The ZF parts come from Germany and they are $$$$$$!!!

just my $0.02.

I have a ZF 6 Speed 4-Sale, I purchased it for my '91. Car was purchased several months ago. Knew trans needed attention, did not realize how expensive it was going to be. There went the good deal on the car.......

Could not find (at the time) anyone local to rebuild it.
After purchasing this rebuilt one, I was able to locate someone
who could. Had my orginal rebuilt, it was $1,830 in parts alone!
I put back in my orginal trans. Now I want to sell the other one.
I just posted it in the C4 parts a few minutes ago.
This one had been rebuilt and worked great. I only put less than
1000k miles on it.
If interested, email kclawson@woh.rr.com

I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me. I bought my 1995 for what was a REALLY good deal, then 2 months later the transmission locked up. $2500 later I now have the thing running good, but it made it just a "regular" deal. Hearing how quiet the new one is, there certainly was a bad bearing in the original one but I had nothing to compare it to when I was buying it so I thought that was just how they sounded.

There is a guy in Tampa that has a business called "White Racing Products" who rebuilds the ZF's for the ZR1 racng guys. I drove over there to exchange mine for a rebuilt one (with the correct input shaft for the LT1). He apparently did a really good job because the transmission works great, but they just cost so much. I was thinking of buying a Richmond a the time, but it was another $800 or so, just shy of being worth it.

thanks for the replys, i think im going for the richmond

Dave, I'd be interested in checking out your car. My tranny makes a noise in first and third, and also at the time I figured they just sounded that way. I've read a lot of posts about the rattle the C5 makes in the 6-speed so I figured the ZF may be similar.

I hope I don't need one soon. I got my vert for a good price and would hate to add the cost of a tranny as well.

If you want you're more than welcome. My car does make a whirring noise in idle and in 1st and a little in second, but it's alot quieter than the last one was. A slight whirring noise is normal.

You should try to make it out to the Space Coast Muscle Car cruise-in tomorrow night. It's every Friday from 6:00 to 9:00 (or whenever) at the Denny's on Wickham Road near the corner of Wickham and Sarno Rd. I normally take the Camaro over there, but lately with the chance of rain being so high I've been taking the Corvette since it's more 'weather proof'.

Also On Saturday it's our monthly cruise to Orlando. I think we're leaving around 3:30 this time to get a parking spot. It's up in the Altamonte area. We leave at 3:30 from the parking lot of the big Chevron Station at I-95 and Eau Gallie.

I'll try to make it down to Denny's. I live off of Lake Washington so it will be pretty close. Then I can hear more about this Orlando Cruise. To bad the weather keeps looking like crap. My top is not as weather proof as I'd like. :(

tranny problems

I to have the zf 6 speed and my 2nd gear is shot if you shift it slow it doesn't grind but power shift it and it sounds like your making chop meat. The rest of the gears are fine most of the time i just go from 1st to 3rd as to not due any more damage. Like you guys said to rebuild these or even look at them is astromomical. I hear you need all special tool's to break them down to rebuild them so that is part of the price there i guess.
Just my 2 cent's
Rich

I would go with ZF personally.
But ill wait till I find someone on this site that has one and needs a gear..
I just rebuilt my 3+4 gears on my ZF S6 40
I paid around $900 for the gear, syncros, slider, gaskets, balls n springs, torque nut, plugs.
But watch out most tranny shop dont know how to build a ZF.

ZF-6. I did a conversion on my 84 Xfire from a 4+3 to the 6 speed. Also installed the Hurst short throw at that time.get a black label if you have a choice. Stouter gears although a bit more noisy due to the square cut. Sort of like the old M22 Rock Crushers. Just make sure you don't buy a ZF for a ZR-1. Input shaft is longer.
