I recently came across a 327 that I was told came out of a 66 vette. While researching the numbers I find that it may not have been. So I thought I would ask here, the experts...

Block casting number 3858174, date J135 (oct 65), stamped on the right front is FIOI3HCH. Now I have determined "F" is for Flint, "IOI3" is actually 1013 (oct 13). Where I am having trouble deciphering is the "HCH". What I believe is "HC" tells me there was a powerglide behind it and the final "H" tells me it was holley equipt. Researching the suffix is telling me this engine should have come out of an Impala not a vette.

Tell me if I am right or wrong.
Thanks

I couldn't find any reference for the trailing "H", but I agree with your assessment: it came out of a full-size '66 Chevy with Powerglide, 275hp. Casting number is right for a 300hp or 350hp Corvette, but not the stamping suffix.

Rocketman,

A big "Howdy" and welcome to CAC.

The HC part of the code checks out to:
1965 full-size Chevy 327/250hp 10.5:1
1966 full-size Chevy 327/275hp 10.5:1
1967 full-size Chevy 327/275hp 10.0:1

Thanks for the info, it is what I thought. Might not be a total waste, it does have the forged crank and camel hump heads.
