Questions about putting my Z06 on the dyno?

Hi there, I'm new to the corvette world seeing as how I just bought an 01' Millenium Yellow Z06. Anyways, i already have full length headers, magnaflow full exhaust, vortex intake, and i believe it has a predator tune. Now, I have a couple questions here. I put it on the dyno and it only made 350hp at the wheel. Now, my question is that could it be that it has a tune on it to make it conservative or something? I would of thought I would be making at least 400 at the wheel with those mods. Secondly, when I ran it on the dyno, the computer said I need to service active handling/traction control. I disconnected the battery in hopes that it would reset itself but with no luck. Eventually, I got home, disconnected the battery for 20 minutes, drove it around after, and it went back to normal. Is there a certain way I have to dyno it so as to avoid the computer freaking out about the active handling/traction control? Thanks!

Hey Jimmy, welcome to the CAC and congrats on your MY Z06. I'm partial to that particular flavor too ;)

I can't answer your questions about the rw horsepower or the service ah/traction control, but hang tight and I expect some of our modded-Z06 members will chime in.

Did you leave the active handling and traction control on during the dyno run?

Well I am not sure what the loss is on a manual I am assuming it is somewhere around 15 percent. So if you take 350*.15 you get 52.5, add that to your 350 and you've got 402.50 at the crank. What are 01 Z's rated at?

01 Z's are rated at 385 HP. I think your wheel hp is about right for your mods.

Make sure you turn the traction control/active handling OFF when you are on the dyno. If it is on the sensors will detect the back wheels moving and the front wheels stationary and attempt to correct the difference.

well, i did have it turned off, thats why im confused?? Do I have to put it in competitive mode to do it? And yea, i guess i was just hoping for a little more power! lol. Cant always get what i want huh. What can get me to the 400+hp at the wheel short of nitrous, turbo or supercharger?

Don't know what to tell you as it sounds like you did it the right way on the dyno. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Maybe if it happens again you can pull your codes and post them here for further help.

Hi xtremejimmy -

I suspect that you might be able to get more out of your mods if you have a dyno tune by an experienced tuner using ls1 edit.

I have no direct experience with a predator, but I do have direct experience with an experienced tuner using ls1 edit - and I was VERY happy with the results.

I think most '01s were in the mid 330 RWHP range stock, so your mods did improve your car significantly.

And of course, although they have not chimed in on this thread as yet, there are many folks who will "poo-poo" any dyno results that they themselves did not witness on their own personal home-town dyno.....and they will tell you how erratic the results can be from one dyno to another.

There is some truth in the latter, but I think and experienced dyno operator can take much of the variability out of the equation.

Finally, 400 RWHP is fairly difficult to achieve, even on the 02 and later Z's, without significant mods.

I think I would try a different tune by someone who knows ls1 edit and see if you can squeeze a few more horses out of it.

I gotta ask why you need 400 wheel hp? An 01 Z is already a hi 12 second car and with your mods should be in the mid 12's. There are very few places you can use that power here in the USA. Now if we had an autobahn here then it is a whole different ballgame. Just my .02

well, for one, i am a big gearhead, and i came up from a gmc typhoon running 12.1 and now im with this z06. Now dont get me wrong, i love my Z06! Its a whole different beast compared to my typhoon, but i was just hoping to make the 400 rwhp mark. Besides, my goal is to run a 12 flat or better. I guess thats why i want that power!

If there is anybody living in south florida that would reccomend a good ls1 edit tuner, let me know. I am willing to pay some $$ to pull the most hp outta this beast.

350 rwhp is about all you will get with any mods - unless, you start modding the engine such as full racing cam new heads, etc.

I agree with mqqn, about having the car tuned with LS1edit. I suspect that the predator tune just isn't exactly right. If you post your dyno sheet, I would think that you have an air fuel ratio greater than 13:1 more like 12:1 or so. The LS6's make most power leaned out to 13:1. 350rwhp says that you've gained 26hp at the flywheel with your mods. I would think that there is an estimated 10rwhp left on the table. In addition, I see you are in Miami, hot and humid could affect your run as much as 10rwhp anyway. Post the sheet and we can look at it for you. Hopefully it is also SAE hp lol!

Hi there again, im gonna see if i can go pick up a copy of the dyno sheet. I dynoed it but never printed it out cause my cousin owns speedlab here in south florida so i was able to dyno it for free. I'll post it up as soon as i can get a copy from him. Worse case scenario, i'll redyno it again to get a print out this time around.

I put drag radials and a VaraRam on my Z06 and have run 12.4 several times. This is at 2600' often with a density altitude of more like 6000'. If you run at sea level, 12 flat is quite possible.

really, i guess i will have to see this coming weekend. if it doesnt rain, im gonna make a few passes down the 1/4 track down here and i'll post my results.

Drag racing can be deceptive and more difficult than it may seem at first. The Z06 is often traction limited. That is why drag radials help so much. Last weekend, there was a Z06 just like mine at the track, except it had a Procharger in it. He was running street tires and the driver had not drag raced before . He did not get below 13, even though he had 100HP more than I did. I ran a 12.4 on one pass. It was all about traction and experience.
