I would like to know if anyone has any information about the Firestone Fire Hawk Tires verses the Goodyear F1 super car tires. Which one is the best? The tires on my Z06 are now about 3/4 worn and the front passenger tire has 2 nails in it. Can it be patched or plugged? Another question.....why does the car shift from 1st to 4th gear?? I find this very annoying!!
It's awesome to have this sight.....I've learned so much.....I hope to meet some of you at the Cruisefest in June. Is there anyone else going down from Canada??

Hi Tyber,

I had a nail in the rear of one of my Goodyear F1 SC's and I had it successfully plugged. I don't know anything about the Firestones.
The 1st to 4th is a really annoying feature called Computer Aided Gear Selection (or is it Shift?) aka CAGS. You will find many threads about it- search on CAGS or skip shift. You can defeat it with a little electronic device that is about $20. If you are a DIY'er, click here.

67Heaven and Z28Canuck are the only other Canadians besides yourself who have registered (so far) for Cruisefest.

Q - Firestone Fire Hawk verses the Goodyear F1 Tires
A - Personal Preference - I'm going to split mine later this year - Firestone Fire Hawk's on the front & Goodyear F1's on the rear (runflats)

Q - Can it be patched or plugged?
A - Either - 1 of my new Goodyear F1's on the rear picked up a nail and was patched very carefully.

Same as Tammy said . . .

Q - Why does the car shift from 1st to 4th gear?
A - To get past gas guzzler tax - Put CAGS on to get rid of the 1st > 4th.

See ya @ CruiseFest! :upthumbs

Later . . . . . .

The stock Z06 GY Super Car F1s are great tires. Get a new set. The Firestones are better in some ways than the C5's stock GY runflats but IMHO not better than non-runflat GY F1 Super Car tires.

A tire patch repair is much better than a plug. The plug can lead to tire seperation and balance problems. If you plan on doing any racing then just get a new tire.

The skip shift CAGS is GMs way to cheat on the EPA gas guzzler (and other government's mileage) tests. It serves no other useful purpose. It is dangerous. Get a Cags eliminator:

I have Michelin Pilot Sports and I like them pretty well. It is not fair to compare old worn out F1's to the new Michelins, but they do stick much better. Also, if the Corvette racing team switched to Michelin, that speaks loudly to me.

But Jim,

Do you think the Corvette Racing Team is using Michelin tires that in any way ressemble your Pilots?

That is certainly a valid question, Remo. I do not know how much technology they share. The real reason that I switched is that I could get the Michelins at Costco for less money than the Goodyears cost at retail.

Remo-
Did you get those snow tires yet? :D

All right Jim, I certainly deserved that shot. Hey, I'm actually taking mine out this Saturday. Snow is gone, we've had some pretty heavy rain storms and the salt is gone as well. And I quit taking the Prozac yesterday.

When was the last time you saw GoodYear tires on a race car in a race where other tires were also used and win the race? GoodYear is a little behind the ball right now in many areas. I think they will turn that around in the future but right now, Michelins are my tire of choice also. Although I like the GY F1 SC EMT's on my CTS-V - they are not available in C5's sizes yet. If I were to need tires soon, I'd be looking at Michelin Pilot Sport AS ZP's for the 03.

What about the Toyo's ?

I'm also considering new Tires and I'm wondering how good the TOYO [font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]PROXES T1-S. Has anyone tried these on their corvette?

Ordered new tires

Hi Hitman 1:
Hey...you have the exact same car I do!!! How do you like it??? Have you had any problems with it??? How many miles are on your car???
Well...I finally made up my mind and purchased the Fire Hawks...I will let you know what they are like.
Thanks everyone for all of the advice....greatly appreciated!!

Hey Tyber,

I didnt notice your Z was the sister of mine. here is a thread where I posted pictures of mine when I first got her. Got any pictures for yours?

I have 15,900 miles on my Z and I bought it used only a month and a half ago. I have never loved a car as much as I love this one. I owned a brand new Trans-Am and a Lexus before this one and I tell you, both combined dont have as much fun as I'm having with the Z.

I got two problems with her that I'm working on correcting right now. 1st, the grey wheels. They're just plain ugly. I ordered my Chromies and they should be here soon. 2nd, is that stupid skip shift; thanks to Tammy's excellent guide I should be eleminating that pretty soon too.

HI there,
I have mounted Firestone, Michelin P/S 2, Nitto N555 and Toyos.
I have found that the best all around traction, wet and dry, would have to be the Michelins.
Firestones/Toyos are a close second.
The Nittos stick like glue in the dry, but wear out quickly and can hydroplane more than the others due to more of a contact point and less channeling.
Allthebest, c4c5
