I'm getting ready to put the differential back in the 71. When I put the drain/fill plug back into the carrier it only screws about half way in. It's NOT cross threaded. Is this normal? I used to work in the pit at one of those fast lube places and we did differential changes all the time. I don't remember it being normal for these plugs to only go half way in. I'm pretty sure it should go all the way in until the head bottoms out.

Please let me know. It's possible I have an incorrect plug after 34 years.

Thanks.

That's normal. If it bottomed out you would have a problem.

It should be a 3/8 npt pipe plug with a flange cast in it. they tighen about 1/2 way in. If you're going to remove the differential why not add a drain plug for future service?
