Racing Fuel

A friend of mine recently gave me a 1.5 gallon can or AP Racing fuel (112 octane, I believe).
What would be a safe amount (per tank) for a mostly stock L98? Id be mixing it with "Premium" fuel (91-92 octane - at least that's what they say...) I want to be able to feel a difference but I don't want to hurt anything.
How careful should I be?

I put some into my almost empty VW Jetta. Wow! I love fake horsepower !! :s
 
Just remember just about all racing gas contains lead.
 
1.5 gallons to a full tank of 93 should be fine. you may even get away with a 50-50 mix but you do run a risk of burning holes in your pistons and the extra octane isn't worth tearing down the engine. i've ran it sometimes but only a few gallons at a time on a full tank.
 
You won't feel any diff. if anything your car might feel slower you "MAY" hurt the injectors or pump I'm not sure. but the pump and inj. are made to run on pump gas. GM say's any addative will hurt them. (true or not i don't know) This I do know the higher the octane the slower the fuel burns! If you slow the flagragation rate you need to start the ign. sooner witch means adv.timing or raise the CR to create more heat!(this is why we started running alu.heads on cars "you can run the same CR ie:9:1 on reg.gas or 10.5:1 on 93.) the alu.cools so quick it tricks the engine. meaning slowing the burn rate of the fuel and not causing detination. I can run 12.1:1 on a boat on pump gas because i cool the heads YOUR CAR WILL NOT! run better. (SUN93 best bet) You won't burn a hole in the piston from high octane fuel. You can ruin valves from low octane fuel or even cruch a piston crown. I'm not going to get into this whole thing I've been trying to avoid this. But i'll go a little low octane fuel burns at a lower temp.than high octane the higher the octane the slower the burn rate. When you raise the CR in an eng. you increase the cyl. temp. low octane fuel can ignight just from cyl.temp due to compresing the air (ie diesel engines)you want to slow the burn rate to where you can control it and antisapate it. Meaning if you start the spark hense ign. @ 6 deg. before top dead center the full explosion won't occure untill X deg.after tdc an uncontroled rate of burn (flageragation) is what causes (ping) that ping as it's called is the valves being pounded into the head by fuel burning to soon. I hope this helps and it's much more indepth than that but we don't have 90 days to explaine it.
