Legal in CA - YES. Not legal in VA, DC and all military bases.

Actually I'm pretty sure that detectors are legal to own in all 50 states.
It's using them that gets you into trouble.
The best idea is to remote-mount it and have a reasonably subtle panel and power switch for the system inside the car. What the police can't see, they can't ticket.
Few if any police departments bother with "detector detectors."
Meanwhile, on a philosophical note, how can acting on radiation that is passing through your body anyway be illegal?

Last time I checked, been a couple years, radar detectors are legal in all 50 states. Minnesota has something about things blocking your view which a radar detector attached to the window would do. I remember doing a search on the web and found a couple informative sites (I don't remember what those sites were).
