Radio/lower right dash removal question

I have an original AM-FM Stereo in my car, but only the right channel works. I beleive the left channel is wired to the right speaker because when I adjust the right to left fade on the unit, I get sound from the right speaker when adjusted to the left.

I understand there is an auxiliary amp of some sort under the passanger dash that is suppose to feed the right speaker that I do see, but would be nice to get to. I removed what I thought was all the screws but the lower dash still seems to be held in somehow. The last I want is to break anything, so I want to be deliberate with it's removal.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'd really like to have the stereo working by the spring.

I removed those screws and it still felt it was being held in by something. Should it just pull out after removing those screws? What about the vent? Can it bel left in?

This is on a 77 mind you, but I had wires clipped to the back and the vent holding it in place. It's been 3 years but I recall that it just dropped down. Can you run your hand back up there and see if anything else is attached?

I'm going to give it another go this weekend. I'll let you know.

Robert..... it's been a while since I had my '72 but if I remember right once the glove box pouch comes off the power amp should be completely exposed. I had to have mine refurbished a couple times and I don't remember the pouch being a problem.

Good luck.............. Nut

Make sure you get the screws out that are by the a/c vent in the center bezel. I think there may be two or three that go in from the center and hold the right panel.

I did remember those screws, but it still seemed to be held in place somehow. Seems that it was very lose, but held in place by something towards the bottom.

I assume its not the center cluster with the gauges you are referring to. If it helps I think the middle screw on the passengerside of the center cluster is screwed into the passengerside dash...you need to remove this screw. The heater tube to the far right (thats if you have a vent there) is sometimes screwed in to the heater vent under the dash. If you open the passenger door you should also see two more screws there holding the passengerside dash to the pillar.

Thanks all, I got the lower dash out. Now I've determined that the left speaker needs to be replaced. I've removed every screw, and removed both pillar post covers. The dash seems to be loose, but I can't get it out.

Any suggestions?

Robert

Did that, got that screw as well. Still won't come. I don't want to force it. Any tips or techniques?

Robert--check over on the LT-1 Forum

Its best if the dash is good and warm. I left mine out in the hot sun for a few hours and it will then have to be flexed or bent in the middle it's much easer with 2 people, holding the middle up with one hand pushing the left side down, and now have the second push the right side down and pull in forward and out.

You will have to bow it like inch or 2 inches higher in the middle than the one side and you will feel like it is going to break. Not something I want to do 2 often scared the heck out of me.

Good luck!!!

It scares the heck out of me as well. For once, Im going to do the smart thing and put everything back before I regret it. I was hoping that this was something that a four thumbed person like myself could tackle. I GUESS NOT!!! Thanks all. I guess I'll have to open the wallet again this spring to have the speaker replaced.
