My '67 stereo seems to work marginally with original radio and speakers. Wouild like to upgrade. Would you suggest USA 1 or keep and rebuild original stereo with new speaker (2x4) in original location? Let me know your experiences. Thanks, I'm new to the forum.

Unless changed at some time in your car's history, its radio is not stereo. They were still monaural FM in those days with one speaker in center dash.

There are aftermarket upgrades to modern technology radios/cassettes available.

Welcome to :CAC

I went with a Kenwood Cassette stereo from ZIP Products...Also went with the dual speaker for the dash and two 6" Round Pioneer speakers that I built into a replacement storage board behind the seats...Still have the orginal AM-FM Radio that didn't work...$5-600 to get those refurbished...

I have a 1966 b/b roaster with side pipes. The car is driven around 3000 to 4000 rpm regularly,With some (6200 rpm blasts) The reason I exspain this car is because some feel you cant hear a stereo in a car with side pipes I realley enjoy my stereo and hear it loud and clear.

I have installed the hidden audio system,I have a tuner/head unit that is hidden and mounted the to the rear of the glovebox box,the unit controller is mounted in the glove box,the 10 cd player is mounted in the passenger side rear compartment on a peice of plywood and is held in place with a nut and bolt thru the drain plug hole,I have a dual front speakers and a press in rear speaker combo. There are NO new screw holes in my car for mounting or support .to return the car to original (as it left the factory I would just replace the glove box box and remove every thing.

I purchased mine from HALLON MARKETING I found them thru a google search. The only problem I have with the system that I am not happy with is that there is a snap thru the front speakers when the unit is turned on I do plan on contacing the manufactuor on my concern. If you need or want I would happily post pictures of the installed product.

Also I can not take credit for the exceptional idea of installing the cd player in the rear cargo area a fellow named andy from a different forum I frequented suggested that. The head unit barely fits behind the glove box and the cd player also barley fits.

Good luck and enjoy your new stereo

I paid good money to have my 66 AM/FM restored and it has been still marginal. I recently installed a Custom Audio Sound Hidden Radio. I installed the panel in the back of the glove compartment. It works great. The original is still in the consol. You only see the replacement when you open the glove compartment door. The RF remote works fine without having to open the glove compartment door. If you decide you might want to go this way i can give you some addl. tips about the installation. I do have one problem with static when I turn off the key with the motor running. I plan to post a seperate post about this, this week. Good luck. I hope you get this. I am new also to this.

Welcome dusty read my post above it sound like we are having the same problem I will try and call the manufactorer tomorow to see what they say is the soulution its a bit anoying isnt it.Did you get the cd player also or just the tuner? And are you using there amp

Thanks for the reply and I may take you up on your offer once I decide how to go. By the way, the E-mail notification for replies to a post is awesome.

Thanks IH2LOSE. I didn't include the CD. Did you buy your dual front speaker from Custom Audio Sound? i.e. I talked with them briefly last fall before I stored the Vette, and they did point out i should check the speaker Wattage. I haven't done this yet because it only happens when I turn the key off with the motor running. I did check the ground. This helped with the radio speaker sound, but didn't seem to reduce the blast of static, or snap, as you said but it is still pretty loud.

I bought mine from Valley Vette, Appleton, WI. I was actually able to install it behind the glove compartment beside the tuning panel, by slightly modifying the bracket. If I ever learn this computer stuff, I can send pics if someone is interested. Like you, all I have to do is replace the glove compartment liner to turn everthing back to original, and reconnect the speaker to the original.

FYI, After repair several years ago by an authorized Delta shop, my original has good sound, and works pretty well, but I lose the signal frequently then it comes back on a little further down the road. See ya

I cut a new jack storage compartment cover and installed a Pioneer receiver into a wooden frame. The new cover and wood frame were wrapped in red marine grade vinyl that matched the interior pretty darn close. There is a Pioneer CD Changer mounted on the underside of the cover, the little black box is the CD Changer's digital display. For an antenna I mounted a brass plate on the underside of the new cover, ran a ground wire under the door sill plate and used a flexible whip antenna. Both the receiver and the CD Changer have wireless remote controls. The electricals are connected using a trailer light connecter. To return to stock all I have to do is pull the trailer plug connecter, tuck the end under the carpet and throw in the original cover.

IH2LOSE,

Thanks. The best part is that there is no static, the rubber whip antenna gets great reception and the whole thing cost under $25 not including the cost of the receiver and CD Changer.

Has anyone had decent success using the exisiting radio with new speakers? Realize it isn't the same as a new stereo.

the existing speaker comes out REAL easey.Come on its over thirty years old,If your adding the new radio for sound pleasure certainley replace the speaker with a dual speaker set up the new tuners are all set for stereo (needs 2 speakers)
