I have a problem that has progressively gotten worse with my original AM-FM radio in my 65 coupe. Over the last few months the radio has developed such a high-pitched whine (well actually its more of a screeching sound) that never goes away and gets worse as I increase the volume level. It doesn't matter if the engine is running or not, it's still there. It is so loud that you can't hear the music. I looked for loose wires/ broken wires but don't seem to find anything out of order. I thought about pulling the radio and replacing the volume and tone control switch as I see them being sold on EBAY (and probably catalogs too, but I haven't looked that hard for something). I don't listen to the radio in the car very often, but its annoying me that I can't even try or my ears start ringing.

Any suggestions?

This was more common in radios in the era of tubes, etc. rather than solid state. I'm certainly not an radio expert, but I'm guessing a capacitor or transformer.

A radio repair shop is your next stop.
