This is my first post and reading through the posts old and new I see theres a lot of great info. Having tough time installing rag joint on 69. I have removed old joint but can not get new one onto spindle. Any tricks or advise? Thanks

I replaced mine on my '75 about a year ago. It was a PITA. I'm not sure that this was the best way to go about it, but in order to keep from having to bugger up the whole process, I removed the steering gear box. There seemed to just not be enough room between the steering shaft and the gear box to get everything apart and back together without prying on stuff . . . something I hate to do . . .

I hope this helps you, although there didn't seem to be any 'magic potion' when I did mine.

Rag Joint

Yeah, you have to either remove the steering box or loosen up the steering column. I loosened the steering column and pulled it back, it was easier for me than removing the steering box.

I have a couple of thoughts, Ski. First, if you got the old one out, you should be able to get the new one in. :) If I remember correctly, both ends are "D" indexed, so they will only slide on each end within a certain range. Second, the bolts through the rag joint have to be removed , as it won't slip on with the "12 point" bolts installed. And third, are you sure you have the right rag joint? Compare it carefully with the one you removed.

I find it easier to pull the column back instead of loosening the steering box. Chuck

Thanks guys. Finally got the joint back together. What a pain. Appreciate the replies.:upthumbs
