I recently bought a 94 convertible but I don't know how to put the top down. I'm sure its simple to do but I only tried once and haven't had chance to try again. I found the yellow button in the console and the other one behind the drivers seat. They both work but I couldn't get the top to fold up after releasing the two front hold downs. I don't know how the compartment opens for the top either.

Someone please help the dummy

Roy

Ok DUMMY ( it took me 3 times too!)

The first time you do this.. have somebody help, you might need somebody to pull the catch while you SLOWLY release the rubber that has bonded to the rear deck or for that matter.. the front rubber which has bonded to the top of the windsheild pillar. Have some silicone spray or other lube for weather stripping goo & clean rags handy.

Do this when it's warm outside & make sure the rear window plastic is clean if it's dirty you will just GRIND the dirt into the plastic!

Scared yet?

First grab under the rear deck lid ( from the drivers side, door open) pull the latch towards you, you should hear a POP.

Next the two rear pins of the top SHOULD have popped up, pull the rear of the top up & foward so the rear window ( bottom frame loop) is now at the 12 o clock position.

Next press the button ( in the center console or on the edge of the drivers door .. and I think on your year maybe on the deck lid it self )and you should hear a solenoid go CLICK this releases the rear deck. pull that up so it's open.

Take all the junk out of the back.

Drop the rear of the top back to it's"Normal"position.

Drop the sunvisior's down and pull the levers out, this releases the top foward catch pins.

Lift the top and slide back.

Close rear deck hatch.

And...AAAAAWAY you go!

Thanks for your reply. It looks like there is a latch handle of some kind that must be pulled ( I gotta look for that ), then you fold the rear of the top towards the front of the car, then push the yellow button to unlock the deck lid, open lid, undo the front latches and the whole thing slides back into the well.

Do I understand that right ??

Roy

Where's Cigar man when ya need him?

Give the man a cigar!

Bingo, you understand.

Mike

The latch handle...

Is located on the underside of the deck lid about centerline and bends down at a 30 ish degree angle. Use a flashlight the first time.

This is for my 88 but I assume there all the same ( generally )

Mike

I'm here.

I was going to give some suggestions, but wasn't sure if the '94 was different than my '89. I know my top is changed from the '88.

Everything you told him was on target Vigman. My latch is behind the inside of the driver's seat under the lid and the release button is on the outside under the lid.

The only thing that I can add is that when you put the top back up and reverse the process, it may be a bit tight when you re-seat the pins on the winshield pillar, especially if the top had not been down much.

Let us know when you've done this about 2 or 3 times, then a cigar award will be considered.

Dont forget to lower the sunvisors when replacing the top. The lock pins will damage them. Then you will be spending $$$ to replace them.

Ok the top is down and all is well. I just had to get in there and look around a little. Thanks for the replys.

Roy

And.......

When the top is cold.. you will need a bit of grunt to get the pins back & latched to be afraid to put a little ENGLISH on it.

While the top is down.. take a minute to lube all the hinges & cables.

Mike

If your top is similar to mine you will also notice that at the rear of the side windows in the strut is a velcro closure to keep wind from getting betwwn the top and the liner. Be sure to detach it each time you lower the top, otherwise it will stress the fabric and eventually work lose from the velcro on the strut.

By the way, if you don't have an owners manual I'd be happy to scan those pages for you. And I think I told you about ordering a GM restoration Kit (free) by calling 1-800-222-1020 and supplyin the VIN number. Lots of great stuff.

If I told you this already, forgive me--it;'s not old age the cigars make me light-headed sometimes and I'm suckung on a nice Perdomo right now...
