My ralley wheels are getting a sprucing up this off season....i want to help make the black on the center of it better but im not sure if i can paint it or what ... i am looking for advise as to which is the best route...i have them apart and it dont seem to hard to strip them of the black paint but the problem is putting it back on them....maybe i could just strip it and leave it chrome....any advise is most appreaciated....chas :w

Well on those theres nothing better than a new set,but you could paint them and look presentable. If memory serves me right they are painted black and the embossed lines are left chrome. So take some spray paint and put one quick coat of black on them and wipe off the embossed area with acetone or lacquer thinner.

Thanks for the tip Paintdaddy. I think I will give laquer thinner a shot at reviving my centers. I am gonna try to paint the lines on the side by hand.

i knew you would help me out paint....it seems to be an impossible task to try and make this look right huh? i have one that is diffrent than the others...seems to have alot more wear and tear...and alot more stone abuse too...it seems to pop right off when removing it , diffrent than the rest too...the black on it is much worse than the others and i was thinking of trying to remove the black with remover and just see what it looks like as chrome....but i dont want to damage the finish underneath the paint....then if i dont like the look i guess i try and repaint the one till i can afford the new ones i have in mind....will paint remover ruin the finish of the chrome?...they are steel and chrome originals....even the odd ball is a chevy original...again thanks for the tip pal...chas :beer

PS...your memory is fine too...the discription is to the letter...so the exhaust system in the paintshop is working fine!

Paintdaddy is right, paint the whole cap portion of it. Dip several Q-tips in thinner, wring out eccess with a paper towel, then run down each spine to expose the shine. I've used the same procedure with a console and it worked perfectly.

Many Thanks....

well you guys have me on the right track and i cant wait to finish this project...because i now have learned what i need to do to restore my console! :w
this is great when one question leads to a variety of applications...i have just a few more quick questions fer ya....

what kind of paint did you use? would it be diffrent from the hat to the console?
do you think i need to strip and prime it?
what about finish? matte , flat ?
there is a painters supply near here if i need diffrent paint than the local parts store has...again , thanks a bunch for the help everybody. :beer

Any semi gloss spray paint will do.A good way to wipe off the areas that stay chrome is to wrap a shop rag around your index finger and dip it in thinner and start wiping, this gives you better control. You asked earlier if stripper will hurt the chrome. It wont hurt it but its alot less messy if you use lacquer thinner to remove the old finish as well.If it doesnt wipe off easy, find something to soak it in.
I did my console this way also,it turned out nice. The hardest part was cleaning the flag emblem on it.

I wish I had read this 6 months ago! :) I repainted my console, and taped up the whole thing! I must of spent hours too.

When I took the tape off, it would scrape some of the paint.... :(

I'll have to try it your way next tme.

I have a Dumb Question - are you guys having good luck wiping off teh paint w/ acetone or thinner while it's still wet or are you letting it dry just a little first? Acetone might work when dry but not sure - thats why I have my dumb question! :)

thanks

PS: anybody tried to repaint the black background on 'StingRay' fender logos this same way? What about front egg crate grills?

PPS: I think all of these (grills, logos, wheel hats...) use the same semi-gloss black right?

I used testors paint pens and redid my crossed flags and they look pretty good. But they are only going on the mail box. You might try using this technique on the stingray script.

I used thinner right after I put the spray can down and gave it a few minutes to set up. I'd call it tacky to the touch. Worked like a charm - Eric:w

I started doing this today....

...and im VERY happy with the results of the first one..doing the rest this weekend...looking forward to touching up the shift plate area inside ...thanks a ton for the help paintdaddy!

Has anyone tried those plastic caps the vendors are selling?

I was looking for a set of trim rims for my 73 and a derby. I was at Carlisle last summer and I scored a set of four nos rims. I saw lots of derby's without the logo on them. They were mostly Asian imports. There were a lot of repro's around. I found a clean driver quality for $10.00- 15.00 ( I can't remember which but it defitinetly was not more. I wouldn't put offshore products on my American beauty- It just wouldn't be American............. Looook around at shows and swap meets- you'll find them.
