I have been building a 383 to put in "my girl" was wondering about this. She has the factory L82 ram air with the two inlets on the filter and the plastic ducting to the core support. You all know what I'm talking about I'm sure. Would it be cool to re-fab the ducting and keep the ram air for the new engine? Maybe do something fancy with aluminum.Or get another type filter? I guess what I'm after is, is the ram air worth keeping on the 383? Any benifits or down falls? Thanks,Ron

Not so much "ram air", more like cold air and all engines LOVE cold air.

To actually ram air through the engine you would have to be traveling close to supersonic speeds.:_rock

There same thing with the newer "ram air" Trans Ams. People remove the baffels and seal up the air box and usually see .1 gain in the 1/4 mi. Its not from air being "rammed", more like colder air being ingested.

the pontiac gto (the judge) had a pair of cable operated ram air scoops when opened was good for only 5 more horsepower

2 cents .... anyone got change?

5 HP is 5 HP ..... Keep the Ram (COLD) Air induction as long as its not restrictive. You have every thing to gain (cold air = HP).

ram air

i have a twin turbo hood, i was thinking of making something that i could possibly fiberglass and then duct to the air cleaner (i'd like to purchase the raim air cleaner)

I think that the cold air intake is very restrictive, if i remember right only about an icnh or so high. I took my duct system off and put a 360 high flow k&n. Also my ducts were warped and bowed in the middle. I think it looks alot cleaner too!

If you get the K&N open element air cleaner there isnt a way to hook up those ducts to it right? If thats the case then youre sucking in the "hot" air from under the hood right? Isnt that going to give you a drop in HP instead of the gain of 15HP that it claims.

The K&N filter gives you the gain of 15 but how much does the open element give you @ by itself and in combo. Is it going to be better than the stock air inlets ducts? Or would the better combo be the stock air induction w/ the K&N filter?

Im thinking of getting this next week but am puzzled about the hot/cold air thing. Dont want to drop a bill and get a loss of performance.

Madvette74,

I thought od possibly doing the very same thing. (Although I did not talk myself into purchasing the turbo style hood...yet.)

If you are succesful, let us know how it worked out and what you did.

While drawing hot air is not a good thing, there is much less restriction than stock, so the balance is toward the "plus" side. But, if it was drawing cold air, as well as being less restrictive, then there would be even more benefit.

I'm thinking about getting a high-flow closed system, but ducting it to the cowl instead of the front. With a much shorter intake path, there is much less restriction.

I took a look at their stuff and read their "add" in the Ford mag but it doesnt seem to be anything more than a nicer looking stock air box. Idont see how making it a nicer shape is going to give you 2tenths of a second off the quarter. Isnt that going to be like a 20HP increase? I just would like to see some experience before I pay $130 you know.

I think just putting in a K&N in the stock airbox would be the best bang for the buck

The open element is less restrictive but is it better to the point to where it is going to make a difference, Joe, or anybody?

Just got an email back from the guys over at the Ram air box site and .....
=====================================
we are presently working on a new design for the C-3. It involves our
new
14x3S air box. It runs a single 6" tube. Our intent is to run the
intake
tube forward & draw air from atop the rad. The air box is done but the
expander snorkel reaching forward to the rad is not.
Get in touch with us in 90 days to see our progress.
Thanks:
