On my 68 w/327 I notice the oil filler cap on the valve cover but Im wondering if the long neck tube with filler cap on the front of the motor is an oil filler cap also.

Forgive my ignorance.

Thanx,
J.

No such thing as a stupid question.

I was just looking through my Mags and I can see it on the 68/327 engine photos. It's not on the 69 models.

Looks like it's right beside the air pump.

Also it looks like it goes into the Intake maifold.

Someone with a 68 will reply.

Yeah it does go down thru the intake and into the block thats why I was wondering.

This is the first old Vette Ive owned, in fact the first old Chevy and it looks like it could be for water or oil but it has an oil type of cap on it, not a radiator type.

If it's for oil I wish Id have found out sooner because I was doing an oil change and I have the finned aluminum 69' style valve covers and the cap on the valve cover was literally stuck on so I gave it just the littlest bit of pressure and the inner neck just snapped off! GRRRRRRR!!!!!! Now I have to go and buy a new valve cover. The inner neck was all scored like someone some years back someone forced a cap on that was too big or something. M/A has'em $150 w/o shipping, life is grand, lol.

Peace,
J.

Found another Mag (1987) which shows a 68. There is no opening on the valve covers for oil. They look like the original valve covers.

"Corvette" is raised on each valve cover.

It's looking like that Pipe sticking out is the original oil spout.

I'll keep looking.

JB_68_Roadster: Yes, to your question "Is that an oil fill tube". You can put oil in it. On my '72, even though it's a 350 & they don't really have this tube, I've got the oil filler tube. My intake is from a '66 327. Fools the guys into thinking my '72 350 is a 327. Also, I put the PCV valve into the filler neck tube, instead of the valve cover. Looks pretty "slick". I'll soon be changing the cast intake for an aluminum one & will still retain the oil fill tube. It's the only way to go when you change the oil or have to add oil to your motor. Put it there instead of trying to through the valve covers.

JB,
I have the 327/300 base motor in mine and the valvr covers do not have the cap and port to add oil. The only place to do it is thru the tube at the front of the block.

Sounds like you have had valve covers switched.

Have fun!

Why would you want to put oil through this? Is this what those caps are on the valve covers for? To put oil in? Doesn't the valve oil work off of the sump oil?

I think 68s had oil fill in intake, someone has added incorrect valve covers to yours, I don't think 68s had oil fill in valve covers.

Thanks guys, this clears up a bit.

I figured thats what it is for but wasnt really sure. I didnt know those werent the stock valve covers untill I started looking for a replacement. I didnt buy the one from M/A yet, Tracy Performance has them for $140 a piece but the guy I spoke to on the phone was not too polite so Id rather pay more and go elsewhere but now that Im 100% sure they arent the stock type heck maybe Ill put chrome or some other less expensive type on.

Does anyone know if the 69's had this same tube? Just asking because now Im wondering if my motor is original or not, if its not then great, now I can mod it with a clear conscience!

Guess Im gonna go and locate the casting numbers so I can unravel the rest of this mystery... Makes me wanna eat a Scooby snack!

Thanks again,
Joe

'68 was the last year for the oil fill tube, '69 went to the valve cover cap. The 300 HP 327 valve covers were painted, and the 350 HP 327 covers were chrome. Both are unique to '68.
