Ok the parking brakes are shot on my 81' My guess is who ever had it before I did liked to do trooper turns since I can't adjust the shoes out any more.

What this all leads to is replacing the rear pads, I pulled the tire, removed the calliper and drilled out the rivits. The heads of the rivits are gone but the rotor will still not come off. Do I need a puller of some time to get this thing to slide off? The brakes are not engaged as I can turn the hub with a pry bar. Any suggestions? Do I need to apply heat? I have already tried lightly popping it and the studs with hammer.

Thanks,
Clint

The studs don't hold the rotor on, so beating them probably won't help. Chances are the rotor hat is rusted to the spindle. Soak the face of the hat with you favorite penetrating oil. Tap the hat BETWEEN the studs. You said you drilled the heads off the rivets, did you drill deep enough to get the shanks of the rivets? You need to drill all the way to the spindle. Then be prepared to check the runout on the rotors when you go back together. Mark one stud and the hole it goes to on the hat.

Tim,
That explains alot. I only drilled the rivets back about a 1/4 of inch not all the way back to the spindel. How do you keep from drilling the rotor itself?

Doesn't matter if you remove some of the rotor hat during the drilling since you won't be replacing the rivets. The lugnuts will hold it on.

It's also very possible that the parking brakes don't work because they are rusted into a solid mass. Good time to replace them w/ a stainless steel brake kit including the crossover cable which sometimes rusts inside the housing.

Kroil is a very good rust penetrant.

Thanks everyone as always for the great info. Drilling tomorrow night. I will let you know what I find.
Clint
