what is it? and where is it on a 88" with a 4+3 tranny?
the mechanic said the rear bushing was shot and that was the cause of my back end "swaying" is he right? [thanks for any info]

"Bushing" singular, or "BushingS", plural? There are a lot of rubber bushings on these cars. Essentially, every place where metal meets metal that requires a bit of flex has a bushing. There are several on both sides of the swaybar, there are a bunch on each shock, there are ones at each end of each control arm (the aluminum rods going from the axle to the frame on each side), there are some on the spring. And they all get less springy with age and loosen up. I've replaced about half the bushings on my '86, using polyurethane ones by Energy Suspension. Some are easy to do, some require a press and a LOT of elbow grease. Get some more specifics and I'll tell you what I can about that piece; others will be glad to chime in as well.

Rear end sway can also be caused by half shaft u-joints going bad....
