i had bad news today...the sound coming from the rear end sounds like the gear is bad, mechanic toldme he had it on the rack , no tires, spinning, making noise like it could even be a tooth snapped off....
i had it in for the noise to a trans shop i thought i could trust....looks like im wrong...now i have a better one lined up for tomorrow morning...im trying to get a grasp on a worst case repair...how much would you expect to pay ?
i have no choice but to fix it....i just hope i can afford it!
Any opinions greatly appreaciated here...
Thanks...Chas:w

check here or here

it all depends on how much you can do yourself.

im not going to do any of it.....

the guy said he would only replace, and that changing the ratio isnt what he wants...just repair...so i guess im kinda at his mercy...i know nothing about this area of repair, hence the reason why im trying to ballpark...that link helps bud...
Thanks, Chas

I just rebuilt my 80, replaced the posi unit (300.00), ring and pinion 3.73 ratio (130.00) new hardened end yokes (120.00 each) all new bearings and races with a shim kit cleaned and painted with the machine shop putting it all together in the center section cost (400.00) I brought it home and installed it back in the car in about 7 hours by myself. It was quite a job, and very expensive to do it the way I did, but in hind sight and shopping around, I don't think I could of had it done with all new parts any cheaper. I have found hole rear end units built to the ratio you want for 1000.00 dollars but, you have shipping to add to that. I would buy one that way next time, and just sell the old parts or keep them as spares. My 80 is a little different than your 73, but I think the prices are pretty close.

Try the following:

Ikerds
Muskegon Brake
Randy's Ring and Pinion

Prices vary if you want to have someone else do it.
Good luck!

if the guy is taking it out, why not go with 3.73 gears , you will have to buy the gears anyway, so why not buy what you like?.mike

I think Stingray6974 is rebuilding these units. I don't recall his exact price but if I recall correctly, it was substantially less than $1,000.

Van Steel rebuilds 63 - 79 rear ends for $545.99.

Of course both of these solutions involve you taking the unit out and paying shipping both ways.

Look closely at the work that is being offered for the $500. Usually bearings, seals, and posi clutches. Nothing wrong with that if all you have is a bad bearing or leaking pinion seal. If you need gears, posi gears, yokes, rear cover- it adds up very quickly. I rebuild them for friends and club members, my cost on parts is between $550-600 no labor or shipping added. This includes new ring & pinion, rebuild kit, side yokes,HD rear cover, custom setup of the posi. With labor they run $1,000-1,200 depending on what is needed or what improvements are requested.

Check on www.corvettefaq.com for the differential rebuild paper. It will help you if you try it yourself or if you have a shop do the work. Bairs or Van steel would certainly be able to rebuild it for you. If your guy isn't sure on setting up the gears I'd look elsewhere.
