I am having the rear bearings replaced and the emergency brakes fixed when I put the car down for the winter. This requires quite a bit of dis-assembly so I'm thinking this is the time to look at suspension restoration and modernization. Cutting to the chase, I have been reading a shark restoration book by Richard Newton and he talks about the rust prone nature of the rear locating arms and that this is the time to look at replacing the arms and/or the bushings for same. I display my ignorance for all to see--what is a rear locating arm, where is it and what does it do?

See photo below - the trailing arm pivots at the frame (where its bushing is), and carries the rear hub, spindle, caliper, rotor, and wheel; it's the "up and down" member in the rear suspension.

Excellent photo of trailing arm and rear frame area by JohnZ.

If you have and are refering to the book by Richard Newton entitled "How to Restore and Modify Your Corvette, 68-82", look in Chapter 6, page 47, for photos of the trailing (control) arm, the trailing arm pocket, etc.

Right book. It seemed he was referring to the trailing arms, I just never heard them called locating arms before. Great pic, many thanks.

I just PM you about trailing arm info that might help you out.
