i just bought my 97 coupe and it has the bose system. the back speakers are really under powered and they sound like midrange speakers, no highs. Is this normal, they don't sound blown and they are the original speakers, is it just a fill speaker?

I felt the same about my Bose rear speakers. Perhaps the idea is simply to fill. Still pretty happy with the overall sound.:cool

Yes, that is correct. They do not have much range. Check out Crutchfield.com they have some good replacements.

Is the bose system sending a bad signal or is it just the speakers

The speakers are the limitation. There are component sets [for the Corvette] that have seperate tweeters so the signal must be there. I have seen may C5s with a subwoofer installed in the rear - center storage compatment. An amp with line-level inputs should work ok if you just want some extra thump.

HI there,
It is the system itself, based on design.
The woofer is in the door, along with the tweeter.
The midrange is in the rear. Sound engineers found they received crisper sound and a broader sound range, with the speakers in the arrangement.

Your coupe is a 97 and most likely you have cone separation in the front speakers. Normal operation gives the fronts 200 watts of power and it would be hard to hear problems in the rears unless the fronts are not functioning correctly. Bose redesigned the front speakers in 2000 and eliminated this problem. There was a TSB on this condition and most dealers replaced the entire front enclosure rather than the speaker-which is not a service part. Your rear speakers are called "twiddlers" and adding a third in the well cover will give you all the sound you can stand. While your at it I would replace the original rears as well, due to their age. If all is functioning correctly you will not be able to get max volume without hurting your ears.
