All...need some help, I have a 79 L-82 with four holes on the rear end. At first I thought it was from a luggage rack that the previous owner had removed, but I am finding out that 79's did not have a luggage rack as an option. Also all the racks I have found (after market) require six to eight holes for installation. With only four holes, and the way they are placed, I am thinking it was an after market spoiler or wing. Anybody have a clue that could lead me down the right track??...thanks

Would it be possible to take a picture of it and post it so we can see exactly was you are describing to us? This way someone can try to solve what these mystery holes in your car. :D

If you are familiar with the 78 pace car body package, the spoiler was available on the 79 VETTES. My 79 L-82 has that spoiler. I have seen 79's with and without the spoiler. Im not sure how many bolts hold mine down, but if youre missing the spoiler than thats what those holes are for.

CHADWICK:

You didn't mention the sizes or spacing of the holes.
They could be for a aftermarket wing.
I installed one last year, You can see some pictures here in the members gallery.
I don't remember the spacing but it's somewhere around:
2: 1/4" holes about 5" apart, and 25" spacing to the other side.

Measure the holes, and then contact:

See if they have anything in those measurements:Steer

The factory spoilers where RPO D80, an option that was available on the 1979's. I have that option. It really makes the car. This included a front spoiler also. If your car has the front spoiler, but not the rear, then that could be what the holes are. My best guess would be, if the holes are in a straight row, parallel to the seam between the body and the rear bumper cover, then that would be for the rear spoiler. But I am just making a guess here. I never saw a D80 optioned car without the rear spoiler on it. You can still buy them from places like Mid-America and others.

Speaking of the D80 spoilers...

What is involved in adding these to the car? Bolt-on, or do they need to be glassed?

Joe

The factory D80 option spoilers are made of the same material as the front and rear bumper covers. No fiberglass in them. Aftermarket companies do make fiberglass repros if that is the way you want to go. Places like Mid-America, Ecklers, etc, have the factory style items available as well as the others. I would guess that the aftermarket kits are bolt-on packages, similar to the factory method. I know that there are some holes drilled in the front mount the side pieces of the spoiler that go up the front of the wheel opening. If you don't have those holes, they'll have to be drilled I guess.

The D80 rear spoiler is bolted to the body with 4 bolts, so I'd say your car has once had one of these:
