I have a 75 Convertible. Occassionally, after stopping, as I accelerate, I hear a slight popping, or grinding from the right rear wheel. It only happens on occassion, and only seems to last about one rotation of the wheel. After that it is fine, no noise at all at any speed. Suggestions?

Thanks...mine is very slight...wouldnt notice if you werent listening for it. Probably is a U joint....was wondering if there was anyway to check them or service them. I know changing a rear wheel bearing is a BIG job!!!

Grinding and popping noises from the rear wheel area...
Not good.
However, if the sound is minimal as you describe, there should be minimal repairs needed.

My 78 had a horrible grinding, moaning, groaning and popping when rolling from a stop or turning slow corners. My problem went on for too long before I discovered what it really was and I wound up having to replace my pumpkin gears.
I had been changing out the u-joints but the actual problem was worn side-yokes. I also went through a set of rear tires. I guess when the side yokes wear out, they allow the rear tires to splay outward and excessively wear the inner treads. No amount of u-joints or alignments will fix it. I finally took my 78 around to several other shops and lucked into a mechanic who was familiar with vettes who diagnosed my problem.

I'd recommend finding a vette mechanic and see what his opinion is.
Good luck, and let us know how it all turns out!

Noise

Like Lee said, try changing the differential lube and put a bottle of GM posi additive in with the new gear lube. The old lube has to be pumped out when I had mine done I just went to Chevrolet and bought 2 bottles of the Gear lube and a bottle of GM posi lube, took it to a local shop here and had them change it as I didnt have a pump to do the job with. It will cure a lot of scary sounding noises.

my diff is quiet till it warms up real good. i am assuming(guess) it is the clutch plate making the noise. now that i have a Mighty Vac. i should be able to pump and refill..

Found my noise

I found the problem with my rear end today. The spring bolts were loose, the ones that bolt it up to the differential. I got down and checked every thing else and all seemed OK. I got new bolts and lock washers and all seems good now, NO NOISE.

thanks, I will check the spring bolts....going to crawl under it this weekend and check all of the u-joints too~~~

What exactly did yours sound like? Like a rubbing sound? And, how did you know the spring bolt was loose?

Hi Stallion,

My sound was more of a rattle/clunk when I first started out. I could see the bolts were loose because I could see light under/through the 2 in the front (they looked loose). When I took a wrench to them they turned real easy. It’s all good now.
