I have converted my 77 to have the removable rear window, and I just purchased a tray to hold the rear window, but I'm not entirely sure how the tray mounts. Can someone with a 68-72 explain the tray mounting, or send a couple of pictures? Thanks, Mike.

mfendley: There were two distinct style trays in the five model years, 68-70 style and 71,72 style, these 2 styles mount slightly different and the clasp at the forward front edge are also different. The improved style is the 71,72 and will hold up better with use in the long run. I'm sorry but haven't ever posted any pictures before, so not sure how to do it!

I think I have the later model, with a push button release similiar to the button for the stroage compartment. I have the rear pivots mounted now, and the tray swings up in place, but I have to find a way to mount the forward clasp - if I drill holes where I think the clasp should go, the holes will go right through the rear deck!

mf, may i ask how much you paid for the shelf? if it's expensive i have an idea to build a tray under the rear deck on my 74..

Mike: I just went out and measured where you should attach your clasp. On 68 - 72 coupes, there is a fiberglass shelf, 2 rivets can be seen, the clasp bracket you are trying to attach should go inbetween these visible rivets. I measured 2 1/8 inch from edge of fiberglass shelf back to drill your 2 holes for bracket. If you don't have the rivets showing for side to side alignment, your car may not use this fiberglass shelf and indeed your tray shelf would be closing way too high.

Mike: The 2 rivets are attaching a metal reinforcement piece that cannot be seen so that the 2 sheet metal type screws have something to bite into and not just the fiberglass! Good luck.

Robin: I bought this tray(shelf) off eBay for $71, and it included both pivot pieces and the clasp. The seller's email is ragtop69400@aol.com, you can check with him to see if he has others. I think I have seen other posts that mention they bought their tray from the same person. BTW, he was great to deal with, good communications and rapid shipping.

Early Shark: Thanks! That is exactly the info I was looking for. My 77 does not have this fiberglass shelf, and you're right - the tray does pivot too high and there is nowhere to attach the clasp. I'm going to have to build something that takes the place of the a shelf. How thick is this shelf, and does it go from side to side, or is it just wide enough for the clasp to attach to? Unless it is bonded to the rear deck, it must extend all the way across and bolt (?) to the sides. Also, how wide is the shelf? Sorry for all the questions - I've seen a picture posted of the mounted clasp, and it shows a portion of the shelf, but not enough to duplicate a replacement.

mfendley: The shelf does indeed go all the way across and is about 4 3/4 inches wide.

mf , will you be coming down this way,for the turkey rod run in nov?

I may, depends on whether I have to ride a sub during that time frame. Is there a flyer, or information online?
