I'm helping my friend put on a rear wing on his 1995 convertible. Does anyone have any helpful hints?

Thanks,

Rich

Yes, accidentally step on it and snap it in half......that way he won't be able to put it on. IMHO, that's the best help you can give him.

(If you haven't guessed, I don't care for wings on Corvettes):(

Real rides are built, Not bought

Speed Kills, so drive a Honda

Honda.... Hold On Not Done Acclerating

vette owner: "i see the problem with your mustang!"
mustang owner: "WHATS THAT???"
vette owner: " its circled on the front grill!!!"

"I never understood the porpouse of making your honda sound like a bumble bee on steiroids"

So if i put a spoiler and a neon on my corvette will i be fast like your honda???

just a little eruo humor!

No, but I bet you would if you added an RX7 (or 8) sticker.

I must admit though that the appearence of some cars is definitely enhanced by the addition of a wing. Take the mid to late 90's Pontiac Grand Ams for example.

But a wing on a Corvette? Maybe the early C4's, but it is reverse geometry on a late C4 in my opinion.....the lines flow contrary to the flow and contour of the back end.

The late C3's definitely needed something on their drooping back ends.....the factory "spoiler" looks nice. A wing, even there however, would be an "overkill".

In most cases, "wing" and "rice" are synonomous.;)

LOLLOLLOL the funnie part is that my brother lives by the word RX7 - he is obbsesed. for petes sake he has 3 of them. but i have been trying to convert him. he jsut dosent know the better way!!!!!

Don't forget the decals...for those few extra ponies he'll get. ;)

Nothing for nothing, I have a greenwood package on my 87 convertible and it looks great(pictures will be posted soon)however, you want to make sure its secured right. Mine has a bracket at both ends that connects the wing to the chassis so it doesnt flex to rear bumper any. Some are put on cheaply and only attach to the bunper. Joel

No wings & no spoilers... These do nothing but spoil the car. C4 body has been built with a philosophy behid it; slender & slick lines and no exegeration in the appearance. Do not spoil it! Don't make it look like an elephant for God's sake.

:( No Wing..........If Bowling Green wanted them to have wings they would of done it......Last guy who worked there said something about Vetts with wings and that employee is yet to be found......He just came up missing the next day at work......
So in other words if Corvettes came with 350ci motor I shouldn't put my 420ci motor in. ;shrug :gap

Wings are eazy to install just take out the rear tail lights....

Yuckkkk, that is exactly what I mean... Fat looking Corvette... I like the red side effects though; rest is rubbish... Sorry

Hey, guys...how quickly this thread has gone downhill!:( I don't think Rich asked for opinions on whether to put on wings or not...he asked for advice on the installation. Unfortunately, very few have given him any!

Rich, I can't help you with your request, but I wish you luck. As an aside, I had a yellow '88 convertible with a full Greenwood package and loved it!;)

GS Diva, Rich started his forum by asking "Does anyone have any helpful hints?" and we all gave him the hint... What's wrong with that???

What's wrong? Something is very wrong when the hints are nothing more than thinly veiled insults and some that are not so thinly veiled!! How would you like it if someone called your choice of Corvette modification "rubbish"?? We all have our likes and dislikes, especially when it comes to Corvettes and what we do to them. But when someone asks for help in installing a wing, I don't think the answer he's looking for is a slap in the face!:(

Let's all be adults here and lend a hand when we can...otherwise, keep our negative criticism to ourselves!

I think the addition of a wing is in the eye of the beholder that matters (owner) and though I would not likely put one on mine I say live and let live...
Note on my sig pic here: Think a wing would allow it to retain that nice flat deck and clean lines?
This is a rag of course but...

Ok, now think about this real hard: Why do you think they call it a "SPOILER"? ;LOL
FX GS, you are my kind of guy... I had the same question in my mind, why is it called a "spoiler"??? Cause it damn spoils the looks of a car...

Thanks buddy (hey, it seems like my SES light has disappeared for good after the O2 sensor change and my rough idle is not happening any more, thx dude)

;) ;) ;)

I like my wing, it came with the Vette when I bought it.

Rich: There are certain questions you can not ask here without getting flamed. As you have seen, corvette purists tend to be vocal and rude toward anyone who wishes to alter a corvette in a way which is... in their opinion... in bad taste... which is to say any alteration which is not a stock factory option. Alterations which purists associate with the rice crowd draw particularly strong reactions. Most especially exterior cosmetic alterations.

If you have reason to interact with corvette purists on a regular basis, then you should consider the social effects of adding a wing to your vette. No one else would have a problem with it.

As for the wing itself, there are two basic kinds... functional and nonfunctional.

Nonfunctional wings are the ricer variety. They do not provide downforce. They only produce drag, and they tend to be silly looking. They are cheaper, and they bolt onto the body of the car. This is especially problematic for the thin fiberglass skinned corvette. The bolts can easily rip out and take part of the body with them.

While I'm certainly not a purist, I do think that nonfunctional items run against the nature of a corvette.

Functional wings produce real down force. The most notable of these come with the Greenwood vette kits. Functional wings are bolted to the frame of the car. They still require holes in the body, obviously. They are more difficult to mount. I think Greenwood will send you the instructions for their mounting. It's probably best to just have a reputable paint/body shop do it though.

If you're going to add a functional wing, you should also add the air dam and the rest of the kit. Since the wing actually works, by itself it will produce increasing understeer as speeds increase. You need the increased downforce in front to keep the car balanced.

The wing needs to be painted to match the car. Often times, these kits are added at the same time the whole car is repainted.

Also, if you ever plan to participate in real racing, you should be aware that there are regulations about the size and location of the wing. I think the most common restrictions are that the wing may not rise higher than the roof line and may not extend further than 6 inches past the rear of the car's body.

Hope that helps.

PS: Coupe89 and Wayne88... I think your cars look great. Well done.
