reassurances needed - gas in oil?

I actually took the Vette out for a short drive today to run it at normal operating temps. Definitely needs chip work, still leaking oil from under the valve covers, may still have a small vac leak, but it's got power even at part throttle... much improved over before.

However... get home, pop the hood to see how things look. Except for the oil leaks, all looks good until I check the oil. There's definitely gas in it, judging by smell, but I don't know how much.

Given that the car just had a fuel injector leak, and I was playing with the injectors (plus the car is running rich and off-time), could I have just introduced enough gas into one or more cylinders while working on that last leak to taint the oil a bit? Also, would this possibly be caused by the new rings not having fully seated yet?

Without pulling things off again (GAH!) is there any way to make sure I didn't wash the oil off one cylinder before starting the car? I realize that any damage that could be done probably was done already...

Thanks...

It's entirely possible, Rich. Definitely change the oil before attempting a restart. ;)

By the way, have you seen my write-up regarding my misforunes with the injectors. ;)

I ran my battery low, so the computer was all screwed up and sending the wrong message ...
When I tried to start it though, I noticed a rather loud "clicking" noise coming from somewhere around the plenum, but couldn't pinpoint it due to the noise from my electric fuel pump. I disconnected the fuel pump from the circuit by removing the fuse, then tried the key again, this time with a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise; # 8 injector was merrily cycling away, pumping tons of fuel into the cylinder.

I unplugged the offending injector and tried it again. Still clicking on #4. I unplugged that one and tried again. Still clicking! So I unplugged them all and tried it that way.

I turned the key with them all unplugged and there was no clicking, so I started plugging them in one-at-a-time. Not only were #4 and #8 cycling, but #3 was as well!!

Now, due to the fact that as I was checking things the first few times, a lot of fuel had accumulated under the plenum and around the manifold base. Even though I checked the oil for any excessive gasoline odor, I decided to pull the plugs just to be on the safe side. It's a good thing I did!

The fuel simply POURED from those three offended cylinders. I mean it poured! I had so much fuel around the front of the car, it was a good thing no one was around smoking.

Definitely planned to do that... good thing I'm not running synthetics yet! I think I have 10 miles on the current oil.

You really need to change the oil if you do have gas in the oil you will spin the bearings out of the motor. Then you are in for some major work and money.

Yes, believe me, get that oil out ASAP, if not sooner, this was the suposed cause of my motor spinning the bearings but that whole story is another issue, but yes if you have even the slightest idea that there is gas in there, dump it. I am sure you know the consequinces of what might happen. Hopefully you can get it fixed before spring.....

Rich, I can just feel your excitement building, even though you have (caution) bugs that are cropping up. Cool!
