Rebuilding Speedo - Where to buy internal gears?

I'm rebuilding my instrument cluster and have the speedo apart. When I drove it previously the odometer would never turn. I found that the gears inside the speedo are quite worn.

Is there a place that sells the internal gears? The only place online I've found them listed is Dr. Rebuild.

Thanks,
Doug

No replies? Does everyone here send their speedo's out for rebuild instead of doing the work themselves? ;-)

Doug,

Check out REDLINE GAUGE and CLOCK REPAIR (sorry no web site) 1-800-375-2310, ask for John...

John rebuilds Speedometers, Gauges and Clocks and does a fantastic job ;)

I suspect everyone does. I've heard of it being done, and some vendors offer a 3-gear set for repairing odometers. Long Island Corvette, for instance.

Trip odometer cables are prone to stick in the "in" position (generally after about 40k miles) and this eventually destroys those plastic gears. But, repair involves removing the cluster, and once going to that trouble, most opt to have the speedo rebuilt so they don't have to do that again anytime soon; the speedo itself generally needs calibration adjustments after service, which is not something an amateur would have the equipment to do.

I think even the General serviced the speedo as a unit; in any event you probably had to go directly to Delco to get service parts. If you replace the odometer gears, get a new trip odometer reset cable as well... I don't think they come apart, and when the lube in it dries, that's what tends to make it stick

I just had my speedometer rebuilt by a shop here in Minnesota. I sent it in though I can imagine that they would sell you parts. My odometer was completely shot too. The gears all worn down. They replaced my entire odometer (NOS). The parts cost $85.00. Repairing and recalibrating the speedo was another $185.00. Here's something from their site.

"APT Instruments International is a complete gauge and instrument service and restoration facility with experienced, full-time and formally trained technicians. We service and restore all makes and models, American and foreign, from 1890 to present."

and their web site address.

Good luck.

I just redid mine (in a C3) and I got the gears out of other GM cars in the junk yard. It took about 10 or so until I found gears that matched but I got them. You mite give it a try if you have a pull your own parts junk yard near by.

Doug, I had mine rebuilt at Southern Electronics. I was very happy with them. I had also used Roger's Clocks and was not happy.

I agree, Southern Electronics does excellent work. For resto on gauges you can't beat Corvette Specialties of Md., pricy but the best!

I agree, Corvette Specialties of Maryland is an outstanding facility. Ask for Brian.

CSoM has my '67 cluster and clock right now (pending 2-part article in "Corvette Enthusiast" on cluster/clock removal and re-install when I get them back); Brian and his crew do terrific work - they've done many gauges and wiper motors for me before.
