Recomendation's for a spray can paint

As some of you know I am building a 62 (not factory correct) and while the body is being done I am finishing up my sub assemblelys,

Whats a sub assembely you say,
Hood latches and there male parts,door latches and the striker plates, trunk lock & trunk striker, Hood hinges and hood support,glove box latching,convertable deck lid latching,ect ect.

You get the idea any thing that gets taken off the car is repaired/rebuilt/repainted. So when assembly time comes its real easy,every thing is clean and all the mounting hardware is ready to go in.

So my question is I am working on the above parts and I am looking for a metalic,metal color paint.

I have tried eastwood

silver cad
almost chrome

But they just seem too thick,or should I say they look like quickly repainted parts.

I may try the alumi blast .

But before I go thru 100 different paint products

Does any body have a product there happy with.

I just did some work on my hood and found the paint with the correct color code at etouchup.com

They may have what you're looking for.

You are not going to be happy with anything but plating. I have tried many paints, and none looked thet good. Get a good load of stuff and take it to the plater. You will find that he will do a large bucket of stuff for the same money as a couple of parts. I broke down years ago and bought my own plating setup for zinc, and It has paid for itself many times over. Doing your own plating is not for a one time project however, since the learning curve is steep and the cost is several hundred dollars to get setup nicely. If you do a lot of restoration however, It is sure nice to be able to do just a couple of parts without having to pay the plater for a $50-$75 minimum charge.

Your probably right,my problem is we have No local platers.So between the wait and the cost of the out of state guys I get to the point that I might as well get reproduction parts allready plated. Then if I am ordering the reproduction parts,(I use Paragon) I mine as well get there show chrome parts.Once I got past all of the tools you & Rich made me buy (for polishing) I been practicly on my budjet and I would like to stay that way,

If I could just get the time Budjet back in check I would be thrilled.

I said it before to you this is absolutely the FUNNEST car I have ever built.

Yea, but some of these parts are not available at all. Those female latches are a perfect example, a nice used set will bring over $200 since nobody repro's them, and those usually need replating!

You might want to look around a little more for a zinc plater in your area. The process is fairly inexpensive and not as nasty as chrome, gold or silver plating.
Most chrome platers do not do Zinc and visa-versa. I have at least 4 shops in a city of less than 300K population that does Zinc plating at a reasonable charge.
In addition, a lot of manufacturing plants will set up their own plating lines to avoid sending it out. I'll bet if you ask around a little, you will find a small shop near you that can run small batches for you.
If you get jammed up on a couple of parts that can not be bought, send your old parts to me and I will plate them for you next time I am doing some stuff for myself.

I use alot of eastwood paints.For the most part if you stay with detail gray and underhood black,youll do good.My rule of thumb is any large pieces of stamped metal goes black and smaller peices go detail gray.

That is the final product I am looking for,but with no further maintnence required. I had some of the manifold dressing that I made a mess with before and thrown it out.I will try the craft store for the buff and rub.

You won't be happy until you plate these pieces. I have used Franford in Philly and recommend them highly....little pricey but they are good platers triple plate Zinc.....I like Eastwood paints, think alumblast is good stuff....

As John and Collin have suggested the plating is your best bet for appearance and it's durability. One other option would be to have them powder coated or ceramic coated. There would be quite a selection of colors if you are interested in that or they also have the silver and either one should hold up well.

You guys win.(and are correct) yesterday I was in touch with 2 platers,And because of the cost and the waiting time (I guess I have a small batch and they only run a large batch at a time) I am going to get what ever I can reproduction.What ever I cant get reproduction I will send to the plater when he does my bumpers and other chrome peices. Thanks for setting me straight guys.

I am more impaitent then cheap and I hate to have to wait for things,It just another loose end I have to think about.All though the car is still at the body shop I am not happy unless the all of the parts are in my plastic storage containers waiting for reassembly.
